They send the patients to the store, and if they don't come back that day, the doctors diagnose them with Alzheimers...)(

There are many types of dementia that can loosely be called "Alzheimer's" by non medical professionals. An MRI and testing by a neurologist can often but not always tell you what disease you are dealing with. Here is a webpage that I've found useful. The various types of dementia, including Alzheimer's are listed along the left side of the page for further reading.

My mother developed Alzheimers in her early 50"s and about the same year I graduated high school. No Kidding and I was devastated.
1st they did a CT scan of her head. They ordered a whole bunch of labs. They did a psychological examination.
I knew we were so totally screwed when the doctor asked her who the president was and she answered "Eisenhower" and when he asked her to name her brothers and sisters, she stated rattling off my dads name and her kids names. She could not tell him what town we were in and what the month was.
The CT scan came back negative except for some atrophy and my mothers labs were perfect, so he said he had ruled out everything else and she had a dementia related to Alzheimers.
My mother died at 63 yrs old with a diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia r/t Alzheimers. I was only 29.

At specialized centers, doctors can diagnose AD correctly up to 90 percent of the time. Doctors use several tools to diagnose "probable" AD, including:

questions about the person's general health, past medical problems, and ability to carry out daily activities;
tests to measure memory, problem solving, attention, counting, and language;
medical tests - such as tests of blood, urine, or spinal fluid; and
brain scans.

We do a mini mental status exam.
Look for degeneration of the brain on radiographs..
and make a knowledgeable guess.
The only way to know for sure is brain biopsy.

DR'S CAN NOT 100% DIAGNOSE THIS, UNTIL THE PERSON HAS PASSED. THEY CAN ONLY ADD 1+1 AND SUSPECT,. ONLY AN AUTOPSY AFTER DEATH CAN CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS.
