I am going to change my major to Criminology in order to pursue what I've always wanted to do, and be a law enforcement officer (eventually I want to work in counterterrorism, but that's a different thing altogether). My question is, if you're a cop, what's the most rewarding aspect of your job? What about the worst part? Is the money worth the job you do? Any advice or insight would be lovely. :-)

Law enforcement is not a job, its a way of life. It will forever change the way you view the world around you.
There is no way to describe the way you feel when you see the way people look at you when you arrive at a bad scene. You are the help they have been waiting on.
However, constantly dealing with the horrible junk that people do to one another can be very depressing. Seeing what people will actually do to each other, and even children, will forever scar you.
For the most part, you will be overworked and underpaid.

Before you make up your mind to join law enforcement, talk with your family and your pastor/priest about this decision. What do they think about the fact you may have to shoot someone ? What if you accidentally shoot an innocent bystander ? Consider these questions very seriously, because it happens very often.

Good luck and God bless.

Knowing you are doing a job that needs to be done and knowing you helped someone

The worst is that you almost never get a thank you, you almost never get told you did a good job, every bad guy is looking for a reason to sue you and the department.

The pay is low for what you do and the risks you take.

And you get caught up on the rush of the excitement, hours of boring, then 20 minutes of rush, it can be adicting.

Remember one thing. You will not change anything if you set out to do that. You will make a difference if you stick to your training and just do the job. That is the reward.
