No, you have to see if your phone is capable in other countries. I have a Nokia through T-Mobile, and it usable in other states, as they have different Satellites. You can read it on your phone's info, and ask the person BEFORE buying one, if you go overseas, a lot! But, now they are more and more cell phones that are becoming capable to use overseas!
Just like electrical appliances, read the info on the product and/or ask questions to someone that specializes with that item!

No. The most common phone overall today is still the GSM phone. In today's situation the most versatlie would be a 4G phone which would work in a 1900, 900, 1800 as well as WCDMA (japan) environment.

No they can not. There are several different cellphone technologies that are completely incompatible, not to mention that some providers artificially tie handsets to their network meaning that you can't take your phone to a different carrier.

No, my Sprint only would work in the U.S. You can get special services or phones that are designed to work internationally.
