Was it because the OT was written by Jews to straighten them into living a less wild and crazy lifestyle?

He probably realised partying with the sinners was more fun than crying with the saints

In the Old Testament, god needed to be more agressive to fulfill the promises He made to the people He had blessed. The greatest promise was sending His son to die for mankind. Satan would have loved to have defeated God in bringing about His son to Earth in the manner He prophesied (see the Books of Isaiah and Psalms as well as Genesis). Even in the NT, satan attempted to have Herod kill Christ as a baby to thwart God's purpose. But he could not. In the Old Testamant as well, he set up so many laws n order for the Jews to have in their mind's eye all the time the reason why they needed the Messiah--their sinful state. He gave them a lot to prepare with and they still denied his son. As for the wars, they primarily were against any who were either occupants of the Promised Land who would not surrender and co-exist peacefully and who posed a serious moral and spiritual threat to the Nation of Israel, or they were civilations so bad, that just like the flood actually ensured that mankind would make it to where we are today, those mass killings ensured that things would not get so bad that God would have to do major, unnesccesary overhaul. it's called nipping things in the bud.

The God in the NT seems to different, because now Jesus had fulfilled the Law, so everything was based on principle and heart condition, not on sacrifices and details that supported the awaiting of the Messiah (much of the Jewish diet even was affected by this), although some new requirements were put in place, they were far less than the old ones. God doesn't do anything without a reason, and he does not add more or less than He needs to get things done.

The Old Testament is a book to teach JUSTICE in an UNJUST World, whereas the New Testament in my view came to teach Mercy to a society already familiar with JUSTICE and ripe to a higher journey towards the path of giving and mercy.

The ingredient of mercy is already there in the OT too, as you can see from the actions of good men such as Abraham who was good to Eliezer... or even Joseph, who was good to his brothers who were not so good to him.

Mercy is the ultimate bedrock, but to get to it, you have to traverse through the lines of justice first.

In my belief as a Muslim, when mercy lost its balance, the need to restore that balance arose, which is why the Prophet of Islam was sent to make sure people do not pray to a man-god, while keeping a sense of balance on the issues of Mercy and Justice.

Actually, when Constantine (last true roman emporer) held the council of Nicea in 324 CE, it was agreed that christianity should have a canon for themselves. Since all the early christians had was the old testament it was kept as tradition but god was tweaked a little in order to make Jesus (whose tweaking turned him from man to messiah) look that much more benevolent and reenforce the Idea of the holy trinity. If you read the Torah (the actual jewish bible) God is much more the father figure then diety who hates his chosen ones and is sending everyone else to hell.

Look at when Jesus got angry. It was in the Temple when threw out the money changers. It is called a righteous anger. God was pretty patient in the old testament, considering how his prophets were treated.

God punished Israel for their disobedience to what God told them to do and the people paid the price, when God sent Jesus onto the scene things changed because God realized that sin was so prevalant in the world that he had to send His only Son to be a sin offering for HIs creation.

Man's perception of God is limited by man's ability to perceive and understand the bigger picture. Evolution is pattern, and man's ability is also evolving and growing....we now know that God IS love, and that the religions of old were fear-based due to man's ignorance. We continue to evolve...

Did you get a spanking when you were a child. Wouldn't have been nice if someone took the spanking for you.
