The Hebrew word can also be translated as "awe." It could be compared to the feeling we have when watching acts of nature -- volcano, tornado, sunset, etc.

The fear of God is not something that should terrify anyone, it's a reverence that we have for God. A strong love that keeps us from doing things that will hurt him.
You can take this example, if you are a child and that you parents give you some instruction you will have a fear to deceived them because they trust you and it's the same for God.

Yes and I don't understand why I am supposed to "fear" God. If people choose to do the right thing only because they "fear" God what is that saying? This is why I think the whole thing about "fearing God" was contrived by man to keep people in line and in control.

Most of the Old Testament was written in the Hebrew and Chaldee language, the New Testament was written in the Greek. In all places in the Bible the word "fear" when used in the way you ask your question means by definition; A deep respect or reverance based on love. Since God created all that is and the Book of Colossians chapter 1 verse 17 says, And he is before all things and by him all things consist (or exist). Since he is the reason that all things exist wouldnt you agree that we should respect who God is and reverance the power that he controls?

To fear God in a Biblical sense means to regard Him--the Almighty, Most Holy, Most High God--with total worshipful submission and reverence. It does NOT mean to be afraid of Him like you might be afraid of some huge bully who wants to sock you in the nose. A lot of people, I think, jump to the wrong conclusion when they hear the word "fear".

Who would fear God? Don't you turn to God when you are in "fear" of something. If I'm very afraid of a situation, I always turn to God and say a prayer.

God wants you to fear him. That is what he wants complete mind control. Follow the ten commando ments and if you don't you are going to hell. I know I am going to hell for denouncing the Catholicism I was brought up in. Ya know what . I don't even care. I'd rather be in hell then with a bunch of hypocritical, mean, cruel harsh people who want you to live on fear your entire life. There are other Gods out there to worship. That is why the first command o ment says "I am your God you will worship no one but me. Screw that. Catholicism. I come from a family that is so brainwashed and hate me for not taking their path. Nice religion huh?

When you know God, you will fear him.
It is to stand as small as I am and with my meager amount of power in front of a force so mighty and awesome as to terrify.
It doesn't mean that I fear God because he will harm me. I fear him because he can, but he doesn't. It is hard to face a force and love that intense. When I face that kind of power and love, it makes me feel microscopic, in that I have felt myself to be anything at all. And it magnifies my sins so that I see how ridiculous I am--to believe that I knew anything at all and thought it a good idea to defy God.

Think on an abusing husband. You prefer to stay with the "macho" because you fear what he can do to you or your kids if you abandon the guy.
If God is love, fear is not the way to follow him.
