Denise, "spirituality" isn't exactly doing a bang up job of bringing out peace, if you haven't noticed.

I think you mean the intelligence to invent God, missy.

Good question, you did express your view, and no I have no questions as to the views you did post.

I in my view seem to see that most scientists are humankind. with that as my thought I must ask you the following so maybe we can reason together. You see as I see it if the clear position of each is not known art the start no reasoning can be accomplished. In fact I see it that even a relative relationship can not be clearly established between the two who are trying to reason together if no clear position of each is established.

Where did scientists come from? How did they start? Did they find themselves by scientific advancement? Oh maybe it was by evolution? Does not something have to be in existence before it can evolve? Can anything be discovered and consider an advancement without something existing prior to its existence?

Sorry for all the questions, but this way I do not have to be charged 5 points for these questions. Do forgive me for that OK.

Really I do think your question is good and I did read all the answers. Seems there are views on both sides.

Do have a great day and you can email me if you want to discuss the answers to my questions OK its cjkeysjr@yahoo.com.ph

LOL nice try though. Believers just tell you it was God that gave us intelligence to undermine the point.

Spirituality can not bring peace unless everyone adopts it…….the same as reason. I am not here to convert anyone but I will try to explain from a spiritual point of view.

Without religion abortion, stem cell research, genetic research, etc… would not be AS ethically debated. I am NOT saying that them standing in the way of progress is good (and more people need to be educated to bring the conservative argument into the real world) BUT I am saying that the two extremes are needed in order to find a middle ground.

You can have spirituality without calling it that. A basic concern for human rights, to value life as priceless, to believe the individual needs to take responsibility not only for their personal actions but to do whatever they can to make the world a better place for EVERYONE to live, a basic belief that life is good (and not some random happenstance where nothing we do matters), etc… .

Science without what I described as spirituality leads you down the road of eugenics, and the Nazis (their inhumane experiments on humans they devalued). Religion without science leads you down the road of the Taliban where archaic and barbaric laws are enforced on people that religions tend to devalue (Non-Believers). Both science and spirituality (religion) are not inherently at odds. If both can hold rational views of the world without devaluing life then both can coexist harmoniously.

The rub, so to speak, is getting religions to drop the superfluous dogma and getting science to take it slow where ethical questions are in the grey. Spirituality (love of humanity, basic compassion, whatever you wish to call it) is the HEART (soul if you will) of our species while science is the BRAIN. One can not function without the other but together…….infinity is the limit.

Science is (generally) hypothetical, particular and physical in nature. Mathematics is formal, universal and mental in nature. This is why for the first 60 years of the development of modern science (1500s Europe) the major thinkers felt that using math would be adding a "mystical" element to an otherwise objective practice. Gregory Chaitin has proved (logically) that mathematics is random. How do we reconcile this with empiricism? I believe science is prefferable to dogma, but is it totally non rreligious (in the broadest sense)?

Maybe one of the things both religion and science have in common is belief - the belief that there is something better and the desire to acheive it.

While religion cannot answer all the questions; remember that science also does not have all the answers.

The function of science to bring about scientific advances. The function of religion is provide relief to existential angst. Religion has not provided scientific advances because that is not it's purpose.

That is both unfair and incorrect. Until the Renaissance, all scientific research went on within the Church. It was a monk who realized that genes exist (while breeding flowers). Many monks studied science to learn more about God, by learning more about His creation.

It was only when the Church tried to forbid scientific research that didn't agree with their interpretation of the Bible that there was a split. But until that point, religion brought about tons of great ideas and innovations.
