It treats infection by making the cell walls of bacteria unstable and leaky, which cause the bacteria to die, thus getting rid of your infection.

Penicillin is an antibiotic. It kills the germs that are causing the infection that is causing your tooth ache. After 24-48 hours, it has usually killed enough germs that you will begin to experience some relief from the pain.

If I were to take your question literally, I'd say that penicillin interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis during cell multiplication, leading to death of the organism, but I don't think that's qhat you really wanted to know.

Regarding the choice of penicillin, it is still probably the most effective antibiotic to use against dental infections and many dentists "still" use it. I use amoxicillin, which is a slightly newer form of penicillin, and I have my reasons, but there is nothing wrong with using penicillin for dental infections - even in the 21st century.

Penicillin is like an antibiotic. You need a prescription for it, or get a shot of it from the doctor. Doctors don't prescribe Penicillin that much anymore.
