I can understand that you want to stop, so have you tried putting tobasco(which is real hot,not salty) on your thumb to help remind you and help break the habit. Good luck

My mom used this stuff on all three of us kids that she put on our thumbs and it broke us of our habit of sucking our thumbs. I don't know if it's the same brand as she used 45 some years ago, but I went to the Walgreen's website and did a search on "thumb sucking" and found a similar product for you. I hope the link works. If not, you at least know how to find it.

Just paint on fingertips.
No nausea or stomach upset.
Proved effective by clinical studies.
For adults, teenagers and children.
Thum is a proven effective method that stops thumb sucking and nail biting habits with the first application.
Lets nails grow longer and naturally beautiful.
Thum contains a bitter tasting, but harmless pure vegetable product which acts as an immediate reminder whenever user puts finger in mouth.
Unlike other preparations, Thum contains no ingredients to cause nausea or upset the stomach.

I know the feeling, I was 19 when I stopped sucking my thumb. It is a bad habit. I stopped when I finally wanted to get acrylics and I realized that I couldn't look cute and still suck my thumb. That's the only way that I was able to stop. I me my husband when I was 18 and when he first came to visit me, I came and sat on the couch with my blanket and put my thumb in my mouth. He looked at me like I was crazy but I didn't care. It is definitely a mind thing and I am now 30 and when I see a certain kind of blanket, I think about sucking my thumb! Good Luck!

i just stuck my hands between my legs at night. You just have to make sure it doesn't go in your mouth then after a while you wonder why y want it in your mouth. You are so lucky your teeth don't stick out i no someone who's teeth have gone REALLY BAD! Another way is putting sports tape on your thumbs then every time it goes in your mouth you get reminded that it shouldn't be in there and take it out. You can also get nail bitting polish that tasted disgusting. and you would never put your thumb in your mouth with that on. But be warned it tastes really bad. GOOD LUCK!

Aw, if you're embarassed, just keep it private if you can. Everyone has bad habits and things we do to relax or feel more comfortable. At least you're not drinking or eating Valium (I hope anyway). :) The people who love you won't care and the strangers just don't need to know about it.

Maybe someday like the prior poster said you'll just give it up on your own... until then my opinion as a mom - there are much worse things you could be doing.

actaully, there is someting you can do. Go to your doctor or a pediatrician and tell them. There is a new product out that is called "the thumb-gaurd" and it is designed to discourage thumb sucking. It is worn when your around the house and is clear so its not noticable to others unless they are really looking at your thumb. It is held on your wrist by a plastic braclet that looks like the "Live-Strong" braclets from Lance Armstrong. Best of luck. And it is not that bad of a habbit- there are worse habbits out there.

Put some tape or similar things wrapping around your thumb. Or try put some bitter materials stick around. Please see how it goes? Since you are adult now, you must have strong will to stop it. Although I can't stop it for my son who is 14.
