Costa Mesa, CA. It is near Newport Beach, but more down to earth and affordable (well, as affordable as Southern California can be at the moment!), but look into the neighborhoods, first. Some are iffy. As far as malls are concerned, Costa Mesa is home to South Coast Plaza. Visit the OC Weekly website for club info. You can always go visit LA for that stuff. It is about an hour north. I think the only natural thing you need to think about is earthquakes, but those are pretty rare.

Los Angeles, CA.
You're near Santa Monica Beach, Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, etc.
There's a lot of club scenes in Hollywood near Sunset/Vine.
Lots of malls like Beverly Center, Arcadia Mall, etc.
LA survived many earthquakes. Well, don't live in Northridge.

Chicago - but you'd probably have to live in a condo & not a house. Has good malls, clubs, no real natural disasters... Lake Michigan is huge and has nice beaches - only bummer is you can only visit them 4 months out of the year - well, at least in a bathing suit.

Did you just say "Los Angeles" and "I don't want a place with like really expensive homes"?
Um, No. It is very, very expensive in L.A.
You're looking at Chicagoland, most likely. Or suburban Washington...
