This is 7 minutes old so this may already be rendered :-(
Control Panel > Sounds, Speech & Audio Devices >Sounds & Audio Devices > (Volume tab) [insure Device volume is above low & check 'Place volume icon in the taskbar' & 'mute' is unchecked] > Apply
While in Sounds & Audio, be sure to look into 'Sounds' tab to verify or design the sound scheme of 'default' or make selections.
Right click taskbar icon to open volume control to insure all slide bars are above low & all mute boxes are unchecked!
Enjoy!

If he's got a Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit you can get the drivers here.

If the system also has onboard sound and you are using an add-in card, make sure that onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS or else it won't recognize your add-in card.

OK. Judging by the specs of that system (T2040), it has an onboard AC97 sound controller. That means you have to first disable the AC97 in your BIOS so it will detect the Live 24-bit card instead. Also make sure you have the audio plugged into the sound card's out jack and not the one onboard.

look for the sound / speakers icon in the control panel. click it.
there will be an option for showing icon on the desktop.

IMPORTANT:

check iin the sound properties if any property is turned of or is muted. unmute it and you can get the sound. restart your system hear for the windows xp login sound. if cannot hear it check in control panel if the sound icon is muted. repeat the proedure cautiously 2 or 3 times and slowly. dont panic or hurry. this is how the problem doesnt get noticed.

if this also doesnt solve your problem then please search the company website that built your sound card. check for updates and install them., restart and your pc has audio on it now........

Well I assume you already tried going to device manager and letting the computer automatically find the drivers.

Looks like you'll have to search the internet for drivers. If you can't find them you'll have to buy a new card. Shouldn't be hard to find them though. just google "sound baster live 24 bit drivers"

Go to control panel/add new hardware/(if Windows can't find the card, do a manual search)/sound etc.

Try changing your sound card to another PCI slot, sometimes there were conflict in the shared IRQ no.
