I mean, why is the idea of a pink, burgandy, violet, or even black gown for a wedding met with such disgust? Have we really been so brainwashed by bridal magazines and tradition? Has the idea of not wearing white becomes so obsolete?
I hate white on me, and hate the idea of a "good moral virgin" girl even MORE (me...a virgin....ha!), as it rings as somewhat sexist, and especially hate the response that "well, white goes best in a church!"
....who said I was getting married in a church?
Anyone else here friendly to the idea of tying the knot with flying colors - literally?

For the record, I'm not getting married anytime soon, I think; it's just a question. So quit it with the snarky "well, maybe you're not ready" comments, ok?

My friend got married in a sultry red, corset-back gown, and it was great. Then again, we had several men in the wedding in kilts, one in drag, and some of the girls gothed up in vinyl corsets and fishnets, so I'm not exactly speaking from the mainstream here.
Red actually is traditional in the East, which you can tell to stuffier family members to calm them down.
But hey, it's your wedding, why not go with purple, black, or whatever you desire? I think it'd be stunning and fitting to your personality. Also, why only wear the dress one day? It could be something you could break out on aniverseries, fancy dates, or just for kicks.
Personally, I'd go with an earthy olive green.

I hate the traditions. Virgins wear white, everyone else wears cream or ivory.
Honestly I think that colored dresses look great. Life today isn't so focused on whether or not the bride is a virgin. Does the groom wear white if HE'S a virgin? Probably not.
I LOVE the idea of a red dress. A friend of mine was just married in June wearing a BRIGHT RED beated salsa dress. What made it so great is that she is a professional salsa dancer. She and her fiance made their wedding SPICY!
While we're on a rant...I HATE those people who say that God is only in a church. Pssh! Please. Last time I checked God didn't say, "I am with you at the corner of 14th and Main and the West Central Methodist Church in St. Louis, Missouri." Riiiiiiiight. We're getting married in an old 1920s theatre and God is going to be right there with us. Secular location doesn't mean God vacates immediately. I'm wearing a dress in ivory, mainly because the dress is GORGEOUS!

It is your wedding!! Let your friends have their dream wedding and you have yours! Remember, you'll regret if you'll feel unconfortable all day; that will be a feeling that won't go away when you remember the day, see the pictures, the video, etc. Have it done the way you like it!! I have a friend with the same problem. She didn't like white, she went with a beautifull home made light brown dress. Some people didn't like it but I can tell you that she was radiant, one of the beautifull brides I ever saw, and I told her just that! Her hapiness was priceless and that it's what's about! If you're feeling confortable people who are there for you will see you're hapiness and your light and they will never notice the colour of your dress! It's your wedding! Be yourself! For what you described it will be wonderfull and a great start for a new life! Best of luck!

Im getting married in 10 months and I also hate wearing white. So I was determined to wear a red princess dress. But as I go shopping for dresses I get pulled in by the white. It is a significate feature of a wedding and being a bride. I saw a girl wearing hot orange dress and it was just as beautiful as white, but I didnt know if she was a bride or not? (It was a couple doing pictures in a park) so I think white is just the norm. Its okay tho, some things that are good don't need changing.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!
I am getting married in March next Year and we are getting married on a beach. i didn't want a plain white dress. i looked every where for a nice dress. untill, i came across a floral dress. white background, still a full wedding gown with pink and purple flowers embroibed through it. I think it is nice to have a bit a colour in the wedding party. my brides maides are 1 pink and the other 1purple, same design dress but just two different colours. so the coulour of thier dresses match the colours in my dress.
i hope this gives you some good ideas and i hope all goes well 4 your wedding. have a beautiful day....

There is nothing wrong with a colored wedding dress in many cultures white is not the traditional dress color...
Why such anger and distain when you are not getting married anytime soon and you could easily research and find a wedding dress/tradition that fits your personal choices and vision of the perfect wedding???
Seems to me you need to do some growing up and this has nothing to do with being ready to marry it has to do with being ready for life and the curves and inside sliders it's going to throw at you...

Sarah Jessica Parker wore black when she married, Gwen Stefani wore pink when she married. You can wear whatever color you want. White gowns have only been in vogue since 1840 when Queen Victoria wore one. Wear what color you look and feel beautiful wearing.

Our daughter got married in a silver evening type gown. She looked beautiful. And has worn it to formal dinners and dances many times since the wedding. She still looks beautiful in it. It is her husband's fav dress. (Wonder why)

My MIL got married in a gorgeous royal blue gown; she looked fabulous. White would just look weird with her skin tone (and personality, she's a hoot!)
