i'm talking about fine dining...i actually have to get their soup or salad, wrap up their bread, give them utensils...its actually more of a PITA than actually waiting on a table..yet they leave nothing.

People tip the waitstaff for services rendered. I guess they just feel that it is a part of your job when they order TO GO food. I really have never thought about that. Now I will though.

Talk to your boss. Other workers in other industries are dependent on their employers to pay them a "living" wage, and usually are forbidden to accept gratuities from customers they may come into contact with. These people, if they could even afford to come into the restaurant where you work would resent not the fact that you receive tips as well as your base pay, but the fact that you complain about not getting tips or not getting tipped enough.

I can still remember when 5% was a "businessman's" tip, and frowned upon by non salesmen. Tipping more than 5% was considered to be solicitation to prostitution.

If waiting tables is such a PITA for you, you need to seek other employment, but don't expect the tax-free compensation you're getting now. (Yes, I know that the IRS requires restraunteurs to tax an estimate of employee's tips.)

Oh, I forgot to answer your base question. When you make up a carry-out order you become a food PREPARER. Food preparers don't get tips. Doesn't feel good, does it?

I usually give a dollar. I always tip if I wait at the bar. If I don't tip, I figure it is because I'm paying regular menu price but not using any of the restaurant perks like not having to clean up afte myself or refill my drink.

Question for you: you don't get taxed on take out bills do you? I know some waiters get taxed automatically even if people don't leave a good tip.

That is why it is called carry out! If people wanted to stay and eat there and TIP they would. You do get an hourly wage? And may be there is something wrong with the restaurant industry as how they pay there staff, but as a consumer I would not tip the person for simply wrapping my order. Should I be tipping the McDonald's staff for wrapping my cheeseburger?

People think that because they are only spending a few minutes in the restaurant that they do not have to tip. I think more people are starting to understand that you should tip at least a little on a togo order, at least here where I live and work.

why does everyone who serves the public in any way feel they deserve a tip? isint what you just described doing your job and dont they pay you for it? people tip waiters & waitresses based on the service they received while seated in a dining room (at least that is how it started) these days anyone that serves anything, anywhere feel they deserve a tip, this is not a mandatory thing and is at the discretion of the customer.. so in answer to your question, NO you dont deserve a tip

i tip based on a set criteria. it is only good for sitting down. it is not good for take out, drive thru, cafeteria style, or anything except sitting down and having stuff brought to me. Excption is a buffet where your drink gets filled and the bus boy cleans up later

base tip: $1(for each additional person add $1)
good service: $1-$4 (add accordingly for each additional person)
if i leave a mess: $1(add $1 for each additional person)
drink never empty: $1

note: poor service results in deductions from the good service and base tip portion.

Because its your JOB! No one has to tip, it would be nice if they all did. Plus, what if they where picking up the food for someone else and that person didn't give them a tip to give you?

you don't have to continue checking up on people, filling up their drinks, etc. you just put the food in a bag and go. you don't tip at the grocery store for someone putting your food in a bag.
