Because a tip is for the service provide by the waitress. Most people don't realize that the waitress is even involved in a takeout order.

How long could it possibly take to give someone a carry out order? A couple of minutes? Of totally nonpersonal service too. I don't leave a tip for that. Hell, I don't even have a table to leave a tip on, and tipping in person is always more awkward. Dealbreaker is the lack of personal contact.

Anyway, my policy is that I'm not obliged to tip anyone except people whose salary is expected to come primarily from tips, generally the hospitality industry: waiters, bartenders, strippers, etc. It irritates me greatly that I'm even expected to tip these, because it's essentially a way of the industry passing costs to you. In a perfect world, I would tip only when receiving service above the standard.

Remember, if you tip everyone even when their service wasn't particularly good, you're encouraging poor service.

Have to agree with the service crowd here. I will tip for take out if there is a waitress or other service person who's wage depends on it involved and then only if they include the napkins and plasticware or ask me if I need anything else, but otherwise it's pay and away.

Honey you aren't serving them. I don't leave tips for carry-out either unless you bring it to my car. You chose the job, you take the pay. But if I eat in I leave 5 dollars for every 20 dollars ordered. And even if its not 20 dollars I leave 5.

Sometimes I do - sometimes I don't. At a nice restaurant I will.... But I think a lot of people feel they have actually made the effort to come and get their meal.
