My mom's ex husband is throwing a suprise birthday party for my soon to be 13 year old sister in December at a hall. My mom is in charge of the decorations, she asked me what would be a good theme for my sis since its a surprise, ok to cut a long story short what seems to be a good idea for a soon to be teenager? Please help! She is not in girlie girl stuff but she does LOVE her horses, maybe a horse theme i dont know Im lost. What theme and what kinda games should be played?

humm.. that's a tough one - here are a few ideas from parties I've been too:
- winter beach party - who cares if december is the dead of winter? You could have a hawaiian lauao theme - with beach balls, frozen drinks, deck chairs, BBQ food etc. Friends of mine in college put on a party like this - they even constructed giant paper fish to hang on the walls, hung a plastic sun on the ceiling and, even put beach sand on the floor.
- Does she have a favorite country or place that she has visited? Then re-create the style and essence of this location - including traditional food, games and music.
- The horse theme is a great one. You could also incorporate some sort of craft project in the party that relates to horses. One idea is to go to an arts and crafts store and purchase small horse shaped plaster models - to be painted or some other horse related item (that can be painted or decorated). Another idea is to buy a large sheet of foam board and have the guests create a horse themed "mural" for your sister's room.

I think it's great that you're all trying to make this a special birthday for her and all, but in my opinion, and I may be a minority here, when you're 13 the quality of your birthdays don't rely very heavily on the decorations and more importantly the 'games'. Make sure to invite plenty of friends. Get her a good cake. Some chips n dip. Do the whole family birthday thing and then set her loose with her friends in a room or in the backyard. That's probably what she would think is a 'cool' birthday at this point.

If she loves horses then go with that theme. As for games - at 13 there aren't too many "games" you can have that won't seem to kiddish. Try talking to a couple of her good friends and get them in on the planning, they can better help you plan a great party in which everyone will have fun.

If she loves horses, include them in some way. It would be cool if everyone went horseback riding to an open field or under the shade of some trees, and have a barbecue? Or picnic. If she is a true country girl, make people come dressed like they were going to a rodeo. Or whatever you know she really likes, use it.

sounds good. :) games. the classic pin the donkey.
haha. don't try that. maybe perhaps good/non violent video games.i suggest ddr? good exercise and fun. a win win situation. board games? chess/checkers? card games- mafia, speed, the usuals. jenga is very tense and exciting.
and a pool if you have one?
a hall party isn't exactly a way to play games.
it seems much more formal and out of place for younger kids.
