Because THAT IS the definition of Bi-polar.

The brain chemical Serotonin is not either being made enough or is not connecting with the receptors enough to make us feel "normal." So we swing from one mood to the other, making life literally hell. You never know whether your going to be able to make plans or 1/2 way thru a step literally want to crawl home and dig yourself under the covers. ITS HELL.

That is the illness. Either you are in an elated state where nothing can go wrong or you are so depressed that you can hardly hold your head up. Your moods swing constantly you don't know whether to laugh or cry depending on the minute and half of the time you can't think straight. Bipolar disorder is a chemical imbalance in the brain. The reason they all need meds like me is to keep the serotonin levels in the brain on an even balance instead of up and down. Bipolars can never stop taking their meds or that vicious cycle of ups and downs come back again.

Speaking as one who is a bipolar. . . . . . . . . .
From high to low. From euphoria to depression. From recklessness to listlessness. These are the extremes associated with bipolar disorder, which can be a serious and disabling mental illness. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic-depression or manic-depressive illness — manic behavior is one extreme of this disorder and depression is the other.
Bipolar disorder often begins in adolescence or early adulthood and may persist throughout life. The causes of bipolar disorder are elusive, and there's no cure.
The flares of bipolar disorder may last for weeks or months, causing great disturbances in the lives of those affected, their friends and their families. Left untreated, the condition usually worsens. But bipolar disorder can be managed with medications and other therapies.
According to the US government's National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), "There is no single cause for bipolar disorder—rather, many factors act together to produce the illness." "Because bipolar disorder tends to run in families, researchers have been searching for specific genes—the microscopic "building blocks" of DNA inside all cells that influence how the body and mind work and grow—passed down through generations that may increase a person's chance of developing the illness." "In addition, findings from gene research suggest that bipolar disorder, like other mental illnesses, does not occur because of a single gene."

Your brain is full of different hormones. The two most common ones that cause happiness are endorphins and seratonin. People with bipolar have serious chemical imbalances in their brains that cause the levels of seratonin and endorphins to go up and down as unpredictable as hurricane weather. That is why clinically diagnosed bipolars HAVE to take medications that balance out the hormones in their brains.

I agree with Eric - yes these are characteristics of this illness.
There are extreme highs and devistating lows. This is why
most of them are put on the drug Lithium - a mood stabilizer to
help them when they are in their "Manic" phase and then the
"Depressive" phase.
