Depends on what you call "unnecessary". Frankly, not many dentists are willing to risk a career and their dental license to damage healthy teeth. If you want to foil "greedy" dentists, take care of your teeth and don't let them decay. What you consider "unnecessary" might be perfectly appropriate.
And I can't imagine why anyone would say something like: "veneers are for rich, materialistic people..."
What a load! If you had known some of the patients I have - people who have lived most of their lives not smiling because they were ashamed of their teeth, women who have had some jerk hit them in the mouth and spoil their beautiful smiles, adults whose parents were poor and couldn't get them good dental care when they were kids who now want to do something for themselves....
There are many benefits of fixing teeth with veneers, including an improved bite, better self-esteem, improved speech, and better chances of getting a job.
To me, these comments about "materialistic" people reeks of reverse discrimination. Don't knock somebody because they want to improve themselves. It's their money, why shouldn't they spend it on something that improves their health and makes them happy?

my opinion is that I would assume that you have not seen a dentist in a long time..and I'm SURE you brush twice a day and floss on a regular basis... and therefore I would assume that you went to a dentist because you were in pain and they told you that you need alot of work done... don't be stupid.. their not out to screw you.. you have just neglected your teeth and now you don't want to believe what their telling you because your teeth are in a "good" condition and your a "good" person and your teeth are super clean because you brush all the time and nothing bad can ever happen to you.. I love when people like you come in our office and think a doctor is willing to lose their license by scamming you out of a few hundred dollars.. ever think its not an unnecessary procedure...ever think you just may need it done because you have neglected your teeth... when your in major pain, and you see a dentist asap, and you want it fixed right then and there, I pray that they turn you away because no doctor should ever help someone who thinks they are a scam artist

My opinion of dentists who recommend unnecessary procedures is low.
My ability to judge whether this has happened based on your message is even lower.

If you think your present dentist is not managing you effectively and properly, I suggest that you transfer to another. Before taking up any suggestions you should research about the procedure, if the dentist is not giving you enough choices, or adding procedures which are not needed.
Dentists who are not honest are profit oriented and misleading.

They almost all do it. You have to think of it as, they want to sell you services and products so they can make money. They assume everything is going to be covered by insurance, and they try to get as much out of the insurance company as they can. You have to educate yourself and decide if you really need what they are selling. My dentist told me I needed a deep cleaning of my gums. I was suspicious. When his receptionist told me my insurance would not cover it and it would cost me $500, I told the dentist I simply could not afford it. He then said I would be okay with a much less expensive cleaning. Good luck finding a dentist who doesn't recommend unnecessary services. They are rare.

Greedy, money hungry. They should care about the important things like your gums, and plaque. Veneers are for the rich, materialistic people.
