beagle, Welsh Corgi, Skipperke would be good. Retrievers and huskies are perfect except that they probably aren't small enough for your requirements.
Avoid those yippy dogs in the "toy" group -- they are bad tempered.

My daughter has just acquired a 4 month old shih-poo and it is Great. I am more of a Cat person but I have fallen in Love with this doggie. They stay small to medium and get up to about 18 lbs and are fine for Apts. They do not shed and are very friendly and playful. It does not bark much - only when it hears a noise like people or other dogs. Although it is not fully train - it stops very quickly. It is so cuddly- but full of spirit.

I think a Pug may be a good choice, depending on how old the child is. Chihuahua is a BAD choice for a child, and sometimes even for an adult! :) I have both a Pug and a Chi, but the Pug is by far the best of the two. She is loyal, obedient, full of energy, and fairly sturdy (as an adult dog). But, just keep in mind that ALL puppies no matter the breed go thru the "puppy" stage which can be very tough... with all the chewing, the barking, the house training, the vet checks... its a real job! so keep that in mind when making your choice. I would say go to the SPCA for your selection.

We rescued a Lhasa Apso/poodle mix and she is the most well behaved dog I have ever come acrossed. She does tricks, does not bark, goes to the door when she needs to potty and is excellent around children. I babysit and the kids can pull the food bowl from her and she does nothing. If I could clone this dog, I would because everyone who has met her wants her. She's a beautiful and wonderful dog. I can't imagine why anyone would have let her go? We can't imagine our lives before "Lilly".

I'd check out your ASPCA . With kids an easy going temperament will be important as well as a dog that will not be frightened but will like to play and many times mixed breed dogs can be very easy going depending on the individual dog. Usually the people working at ASPCA will help you with knowing about the dogs.Good luck!

A pug would be great. They stay small and love to play. They are also very affectionate towards people. Just make sure you don't let them get to hot, pugs can't play to much, it's not good for their health. But all in all they are one of the best dogs i've ever had.

I raise rat terriers and I have found they are the best dogs for kids. They are not too big and not too small and are very smart. They are loyal and loving while protective at the same time. They are very sturdy so they can withstand a bit of rough housing without worrying about hurting them.

Get a shelter mutt.
They make the best pets. You get a lot of "extras" and save a life too.
Talk to the shelter workers, they spend a lot of time with the animals and can tell you which would be best for your family.
Good Luck

dashhunds & pugs are the best choices, they have stong bones (with the dashhund when they get older they have back problems so be careful there), and they are very sweet and loving toward young children. DON'T get hyper dogs (even small) like chihuahua, small doberman, etc.
