I had an experience with a cat that did that. Have you changed the spot for the litter box? some cats do not like when you change the spot, they get thrown off by it. The other is a clean litter pan, which alot of other people already said. Buy the scoop litter, it helps with the litter going straight to the bottom. To the human eye it may look clean but a cat can smell even a small scent in the box. Think about buying one of those self cleaning litter boxes they are great!!

Sometimes at do this when they are angry about something or their litter box is dirty. Use Nature's Miracle to clean the carpet and it should get rid of the scent too - so the kitty won't be attracted to the same spot again. My vet says to place the cat's food dish in the area where the cat is pooping to discourage the pooping. Cat's don't eat where they go to the restroom. Also, have you moved the litter box lately? Make sure the kitty knows where the litter box is! Good luck...my cat is doing the same thing too, it's a mystery.

She might have an infection or worms (especially if she has diarrhea) I agree that a cat WILL NOT use a dirty box. Replace/scoop the litter daily, and clean the box weekly (even with fresh litter, she'll smell a dirty box) If the box has been moved, make sure she knows where it is (with me, usually all it takes is to put her in the box a couple of times) Sometimes, a cat won't use the box if you changed brands/types of litter-heck, my previous cat wouldn't use the automatic cat box I bought for a few days (I think he was scared of it at first)

It may not "mean" anything if you are using that term to attribute human emotions to your cat, like displeasure with you or taking revenge on you.
I have a strange little cat who went through a seige of pooping beside the litterbox in the living room. With six boxes to choose from it wasn't because she couldn't find a clean one. She urinated throughout the house too. She got trained back to a box for her urine and goes outside and poops everyday in the dirt outside the kitchen door.
Your cat could be having a problem with constipation, making it difficult to move her bowels or even painful. That's why most cats stop using litterboxes.
My son's cat had the world's fithiest box. It was never changed or scooped or cleaned and the cat used the box faithfully for all of his thirteen years.

I had a cat that did this. She had an infection.
She couldn't handle the clay in the litter. When I switched out the litter to a flushable kind, she did much better. I had to give her special food that would help her body fuctions. I would say take the cat to the vet. She might have some kind of infection causing this reaction. It's best if you treat that... Might be enough to clear it all up.

Did you change the cat litter brand? Or does the litter box need to be cleaned? Cats display their dislike with something in this manner.

Sense cats think they are Gods they can be very picky. If my cats litter box isn't really clean then he won't use it and find other places to do his business. Other then that you may just have a bad cat.

She may have an infection, she may not have been taught to use the box properly. Make sure its clean. Cats hate a dirty box

- the litter box does not meet her standards (not scooped out, lingering smells if it is cleaned out, litter is not working for her)
- non-obvious illness/injury/infection (cats can't tell you what's wrong, sometimes they act out in order for you to pay attention. . .much like children)
- generally unhappy about something (loss of mate, addition of new household memeber, stress over some change, major change in life that she can't adjust to)
- regression (Sometimes cats of any age will regress back to kittenhood and become unpottytrained, this reason can be the most frustrating.)
Please take your cat to the vet just to rule out sickness.
