just wondering if anyone would buy a purebred pittbull if they were still legal to sell and buy. Keep in mind, that the VAST MAJORITY of 'attacks' were from cross breeds.

In australia, they are no longer legal to breed, sell or buy. there were a few 'attacks' from cross breeds. I have pitbulls, and i have treated them like little babies, and now they are the biggest wusses.

still legal here. I however keep myself up to date on the BSL that are going all around the world. I own one and get this (long silence) I have 3 kids, 2 of whom were born while we have had the dog, the other was very young when we got him. For all you hateful and ignorant idiots out there, I hope for your sake that the breed you love never goes through what this breed has. Then you can see what we are fighting for.

First of all in the USA all dogs including Pit Bull Terriers and Am Staff Terriers are legal to sell, purchase and breed. There are many professional breeders that have been improving the bully breeds for years.

There are also many pit bull pedigree and mixed breed dogs that are working today in search and rescue teams, as therapy dogs and as police or drug or bomb dogs.

Also all of the pit bull breeds were originally bred to be animal aggressive not people aggressive. The dogs of the pit bull variety that arre making all these fantastic headlines where people are being mauled to death or near death are pit bull type dogs that are owned by irresponsible dog owners. These people have less then ZERO Dog Knowledge - these dogs were not taught manners, were not taken through basic and advanced obedience classes, they were never tested by the AKC as a Good Citizen.
almost all of the dogs in the news were running loose at large with no leash, no muzzle, no nothing.

You cannot blame the dogs if the owners fail to train the dog and if the owners fail to keep the dog on a leash and or muzzled -

If these dogs were muzzled and on a leash, none of these attacks would have happenedd. You are wrong and ill informed and BSL is wrong.

All dog have the propensity to bite and there are a number of large dogs that can cause as much damage as a bully mix like a presa canario or a cane corso, doberman, rottweiler, german shepard, dalmation, and many others and of course any of these dogs mixed with who knows what.

The owner controls what the dog will be like as an adult - if a dog is successfully taught basic and advance obedience, is socialized for people and animals and is kept on a leash at all times or fended in a yard with a double security lock and muzzled when walked on a leash by a dog owner over the age of 13 and a person must be close to 5 feet tall and weigh at least 100 pounds.

If these dog owners were responsible and really cared about these dogs, these events would never have happened. Most of these mixed dogs were being used in illegal dog fights - ILLEGAL DOG FIGHTS - It is not the breed it is the bad people that are turning these nice dogs into killers and then setting them loose on society and even if we did ban all the bully breeds don't you think that these ILLEGAL DOG FIGHTERS would just pick another breed and repeat the same madness?

These horrible people don't care a hoot about anything except the money that they make for fighting dogs - Increase the penalties for the men and women behind dogd fighting - send them to jail of 10 years and then see who is laughing last -

Point your anger at the monsters that are runing a perfectly good line of solid dogs between their involvement in drugs and animal fighting they are the ruination of decent neighborhoods.

Pit Bulls are some of the most loving and affectionate dogs God ever created - these people, bad people are twisting these dogs by starving and beating them and using some as bait dogs and some as fighters - these dogs are never taught any manners, never shown any love - the only human touch they know inflicts pain - these dogs are no more responsible then a mentally ill person is responsible for killing someone.

They are legal to buy in my state, and actually I have one! She is the sweetest thing to ever walk this earth and has actually been attacked by two unleashed small dogs while I was walking her and she just backed up because she knows that I do not tolerate any violence from her. It's all in the way they are raised and pit bulls get a terrible rap....in reality, she is the most loyal and sweet dog I have ever had.
What really needs to happen, is much stiffer penalties for people who abuse and neglect their dogs and for people who do not use leashes while in the public...more $$$ needs to be pumped into that.

Here is an exerpt from a website:

Between 1979 and 1994, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) reports that one of every three deaths can be attributed to Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, and Alaskan Malamutes. Wolf-dog hybrids were also responsible for a significant number of deaths.

Deaths, however, were not limited to these breeds. In the list cited by HSUS, the remaining TWO-THIRDS of fatalities were caused by a variety of dog breeds and mixes. In a study published in the September 1989 Journal of the American Medical Association, breeds one wouldn't normally consider "dangerous," such as the Labrador Retriever, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Cocker Spaniel, and English Sheepdog, were attributed with one or more fatalities from a period of 1979-1988. (A Yorkshire Terrier has even been attributed with a fatality!)

Great question, by the way!

In the US it is still legal to buy and sell Pits. I would definitely own one. The whole "attack" thing goes into genetics and how you raise them. If they are from a sound blood line and you aren't raising them to be aggressive or to fight, then they are really good dogs. I personally love Boxers and have never had Pits, but I have had friends that owned very well behaved, non aggressive Pits and they all thought they were lap dogs.

I have one and he's the biggest baby you could imagine. Complete strangers walk into my house and he doesn't even bark- he wants to play. Statistics are that the American pit bull is the third least likely breed to bite a human, but one of the most likely to bite another animal. Mine doesn't even want to do that. He plays with the neighborhood cats! So, yes, I'd get another one. It's all in how you raise them.

I had no idea that it was illegal to buy or sell them.
I would consider a rescue one, but I would not buy one from any store or backyard breeder- ever.
I also want to add to your comment about the "attacks" THIS ALSO IS DUE TO POOR OR NON EXISTENT SOCIAL SKILLS. Ignorant dog owners of ANY BREED should not have ANY pets, including FISH.

well I live in MI & it is still leagal to have buy breed & sell em here & yes I would own one if I had the time & energy it takes to properly train & maintain a pitt, they require A LOT of socialization & a frim hand w/out aggresive training...at this time in my life I dont have the amount of time it would take to ensure my pitt would be well socialized & get the attention it might need to grow up a submissive & relaxed doggie I want so "no" at this time I wouldnt purchase one but in a different setting for sure I Love pitts

They ARE still legal in many parts of the world. I have a neighbor upstairs from me, that has one. He is just about the gentlest dog, I've ever seen. And just about the friendliest as well.

If they could be brought up the way this one has been, they wouldn't be a problem.

But, unfortunately, too many people still want them in order to have them fight.

They are in fact legal and still remain one of the most popular breeds in north america. They are wonderful and loving animals. It is the owners who line breed them and train them to be so violent.
