How old are you? do you have a job? do you have a bank account,
If you are working and have a bank account then apply at your bank. If they say no then get a secured card and use it like a credit card. Make sure you pay each month on time. credit card companies don't like you paying off bills the like to see long history of steady payments.

It kind of depends whether or not you're carrying a balance. Money Magazine lists the best credit cards to carry, for both people who carry balances or for people who pay off their balance every month. I think you'll find it useful. There will probably be an issue of it at your local library if you want to glance through it sometime.
