Ha, I'm from Michigan and it always has been pop. Never soda. Only thing soda is a cracker! NY is pop upstate, soda in NYC. Texas it's a coke. Everything including pepsi is referred to as a coke in CC, tx. Az is mixed-I think cause few are from AZ almost all transplants so it's soda or pop depending where you're from originally. Hope this helps.

actually the first carbonated water was called soda water, hence soda. once coke and pepsi became popular, they were known as coke and pepsi however for slang purposes, when referring to flavored soda water drinks, nicknames came about such as soda and pop.

New york stays true to the original names but other places still call it pop. the name pop came about from the popping sound that is heard when opening the non-twist off bottles.

Soda is considered seltzer in some parts, but we say soda here in Jersey...never "pop". Coke seems to be pretty universal, though...

I say soda, I think pop is a southern phrase. I use to spend my summers as a child in Louisiana and Texas, and my family say's pop or cool drink.

Man I am not so sure about you people sometimes. You are trying to tell me that you call ALL soda Coke? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Thats like calling all cars Chevy's. "Hey what kind of Chevy do you have" Oh its a 2003 BMW. "Thats one cool Chevy man....." Sometimes it hurts me that the East Coast is connected to some of you. Its soda... period.

Soda pop. Grew up in Indiana and that's what we called it. Now if I make a mistake and say it here (Texas) people look at me like I'm an alien. @@ whatever.

I moved to NY from Michigan and when I asked for a pop, the clerk gave me a popsicle. Its the same thing with gym shoes and sneakers. What the hell is a sneaker. Are you supposed to be walking around on tip toes or something?

I say "p"op... But i know up in Michigan it's soda and in Alabama its "cold drink" or "coke" I'm think the reasoning behind it is just the way you were raised to say it.
