Yes.
Some have helped; some of the better, more reputable ones.
Some have hindered by holding out to people unrealistic expectations and many of those probably become disillusioned.
One of the difficult aspects is the large sums of money which they seek. And seek from many who have almost nothing. True, there is the illustration of the "widow's mite"; but she gave it willingly and not to some tele-evangelist who already has much much much more than she had.
Even the most reputable tele-evangelists do need what we think of as large amounts of funds, BECAUSE television time is expensive. But such people and groups need accountability.
So, the answer to the question is" YES and NO

Being a Christian, I believe that most televangelists are in it for the wrong reasons, money, fame, etc. There are a few that I believe are sincere like Billy Graham and Paul Stanley.

Hindered. I think they have put a bad name out there for Christianity. Look at Tammy Faye Baker and her husband. Most of the Televangelists are full of it and they are really bad people. It angers me that they do what they do.
They will be punished for being liars and stealers on judgement day.

Personally, I don't like most televangelists, but I don't fault anyone who finds solace there. There must be quite a few, or they would be off the air.

Honestly, I think a majority of them hinder and confuse.
But, God does work through pastors who preach the message of grace - like David Jeremiah, Charles Stanley, and others.
Not everyone is like the Couch's and many on TBN, and I am confident many have come to know Jesus through the faithful ones.

They siphoned off a lot of money that should have gone to a good cause, and instead bought nice houses, cars, funny hair, and fast women - and I doubt you would say that was God's will.

I know a couple of people who came to faith in Jesus while watching Billy Graham on TV. But other than BG I think most of them hurt the cause.

I believe that they havent done anything but kep their programs air time paid for by getting on and spreading their word of God, We all have access to the scriptures and we all have the ability to maintain our own levels of faith. Yet we dont have to ask for donations from others in order to do so, now do we?

Somehow, I don't think God wants his messengers to be asking for money, living lavish lifestyles, and wearing really bad toupees.
