Actually, the P- word didn't used to be considered vulgar. Back in the day, it used to be cartoons like Josie and the Pussycats, and PussyWillows, (they're just willows now). And children's books had the word all through nursery rhymes, and Tom Jones sang: What's New Pussycat? The world was a little more innocent than now, I suppose. Maybe it became a bad word when PussyGalore was on James Bond.
I can't say when or why they were called that to begin with, but it's been longer than Puss N Boots, nursery rhymes. I think it started in old England, when felines were just called Pussycats, without the cat added.

The "P" word means cat in the Filipino language, I am sure it meas cat in other languages too. English seems to be derived from many languages.

Long before that word was used to refer to a human female's "bush" there was an old English nursery rhyme which went -- I love little pussy, her coat is so warm .....
