The definition has changed. When we say anti-semitic we mean jew haters. But by actual dictionary definition, it used to be that people from the middle east are semites.

The Semitic people include all the people of Mid-east heritage. It is a mis-use of the word, that most people mis-use. People use it to refer to Jews, no matter where they are from.

The term "semitic" comes from the name "Shem." Shem was one of the three sons of Noah. His descendants supposedly are the Jewish race and all of their distant cousins. The term semitic, however, has been narrowed to mean Jewish (whether you mean the culture, religion or race). I hope this helps.
