Assimilation can not be forced on any individual, many assimilate to make their lives easier. Many first generation immigrants never assimilate no matter what country they came from, it usually isn't until the second or third generation (with the native language usually being lost) that families or groups assimilate.

The american culture first begins with a language and in the United States that language is English, so the first step to assimilate into American culture is to learn the language, the second step is to learn the laws of the society in which you live and abide by those laws do not drive with you have no license, do not expect services of a government nature unless you are a certified citizen (which means legal). The third step pay taxes learn the customs of the land in which you find yourself, do not just keep expecting people to learn your culture and language when they are not in your country and you are not as well.

I agree that the first mark of assimilation is learning English. Until someone speaks English, they are not assimilated.
And, they must have some knowledge of American history, the fact that this nation was a new concept in its day, the concept that the people and their freedoms are more important than the government.
They should be ready to celebrate in the 4th of July meanings.
There is plenty of room for people to speak their native language at home, and to eat traditional foods from their native country.

No one is asking, well at least no one I know of, the immigrants to assimilate to the point of losing their heritage and culture. Their culture is our culture, and our's their's. Roots and history are what make a people. What people want is for immigrants who say they love this country and want nothing more than to be a valuable and valid part of it, to take part in a legal way. To take on American customs in addition to their native country's. To speak English or at least attempt to communicate with it's other legal citizens and, for crying out loud, wave the AMERICAN Flag every once in a while instead of another country's flag when they are protesting their right to be in this country.

I'd just as soon that those that have entered our country illegally did NOT assimilate themselves, I'd just as soon they packed their bags and left. For those people that would LIKE to be americans, start learning about our culture, start learning about our history, and start having a little respect for the people that already live in our country. Or, go back where you came from, where it's obviously SOOOO much better than the United States.
We've got a good country, but there's a problem with the latest batch of 'newcomers', people that feel inclined and entitled to give us lectures on how to run our country, and why they should get what amounts to a free ride, and a free pass for having blatantly broken our laws. I say if you DON'T like our country,
please leave. No country's perfect, ours is no exception, the major difference between others and ours is that we have freedoms and a brighter future than others because we SOLVE our problems ourselves, instead of expecting other countries to do it for us. That's how we got things like 'lightbulbs', and 'ballots'.
Again, departure for illegal immigrants, and a 'thanks for visiting' hat for people that just don't 'get it'.

Assimilation begins with learning English. It also consists of NOT degrading the American flag or protesting illegal activities. If life is so bad for illegals here, they can always return to their country of origin. Does that answer your question?
Also, there are days set aside for the celebration of all cultures, such as; St. Patricks day, Columbus day Cinco de Mayo, and many others. We do not expect or want you to forget your culture. We want you to celebrate it appropriately and within the law.

We speak English first of all. Our flag does NOT have a buzzard on it. The ones who don't want to assimilate should not be allowed to stay here.

i did, and i will again in the words of our 26th president
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
