I strongly recommend a human quality dog food, half wet food and half dry food that uses organically grown grains and vegetables.
I recommend Dick Van Pattens and Paul Newman's Own dog food brands. They are both available at Petco and Pet Smart stores and both companies have their own web sites where you can order the food you want and have it delivered to your door at prices that are competitive with the retail stores.
You can even select auto-ship and set up a delivery schedule where your order will be filled every so many weeks - on what ever schedule you decide, this is convenient and you never need to remember to order dog food, every so many weeks, the food just shows up.
Don't just take my word about the quality of the food - read the labels and compare then for yourself .
The analysis that has been done so far seems to point to the dogs that are switched to human grade dog food are experiencing much longer lives and they are staying much healthier for much longer and the # of cancer cases is in a rapid decline also.
You can also add an egg and or some fish oil monthly to add a nice sheen to your dogs coat in addition to an excellent dog shampoo that is made for bllack dogs. Never use a persons shampoo on a dogs coat because dogs skin and a persons scalp have a very different PH Level and if you use a persons shampoo on a dog the dogs coat will not be shiny and the skin could dry out and start to flake. For economical prices on dog shampoos try out the online catalog of pet edge at www.petedge.com
Good Luck

Ahhh...these answers are killing me! Some are correct, some not so much so.
Don't waste you time with eggs and milk and peanut butter. All that is going to do is give your dog the runs.
I don't know what you are feeding now but the correct answer to your question is to feed a premium brand dog food. I feed my dogs Nutro Natural Choice dog food. It is the only dog food on the market to GUARANTEE an improvement in skin and coat in 30 days or your money back. It is corn, wheat, and soy free and doesn't use artificial preservatives. Best bet is to get the Lamb and Rice formula (green bags)

A premium kibble such as Canidae ,Wellness , Innova. Or you can go to the Barf diet which a lot of people sware by for a shiny coat and healthy teeth.I can't bring myself do feed it .If you decide to use the barf diet ,please read up on it first. Then there's also fish oils to. The premium kibbles have the omega 3 and the fatty acids added for a healthy coat.

I work at a Vet's office and we always recommend a diet rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids. It will make her coat shiny and promote healthy skin. Regular grooming is also a must, she should get brushed twice a week and bathed evry 2 weeks.

A little bit of Olive Oil or a good quality fish oil in their food is great and also keeps them regular!
Not too much though otherwise you'll give him the runs!!!
Also try using the shiny gloss that trainers and owners put on their show ponies and race horses. Its very good for their fur and their skin as it is designed for animals!
