I am very blessed to live in the community I do, but like all areas, it has its problems.
1) Our main problem is affordable housing. Our community has no area left to expand into, so the developers choose to build high priced homes to maximize their profit. I cannot blame them for choosing to keep the economy elastic, but we have held meetings, petitioned the state, and asked for zoning laws to be changed to force some areas to be affordable to the community service people a community needs. Our teachers cannot afford to live within our borders unless they rent. Same for our firemen and police officers.
2) Our county is one of the largest for welfare assistance, so that we have people petitioning our churches and schools for emergency funds all the time. It's a constant drain. A better balance needs to be maintained so that the tax base can afford to support the level of poverty within our borders. Eighty percent of apartment rentals are CDA assisted. This bounces back into the first problem. The people above the assistance level but below a proper economic index for survival are struggling to find somewhere to live so they do not have to commute over thirty minutes to their jobs. On our icy winter roads, it ges to be a real issue.
3) We lack adequate public transportation. While I have a bus stop outside my home that runs until 11 PM, I cannot have a job across the river that lasts past 8:30 PM because the last bus to cross the river leaves at 9 PM. After that, we are stranded. It means over half the jobs in my area are unavailable to me without owning a car. The northern suburbs have better busing.
The best thing that I can do to improve these situations is to make sure that I vote. That gives me a public voice about changes. I can also attend city and county council meetings, read the newspaper, and listen to people who have ideas for improvement. Then I share these items with my students and other voting adults.

1. Transportation issues. We need safer drivers ... we need better roads ... we need more environment friendly vehicles ... we need environment friendly parking ... we need to make "Rush Hour" less bottle-necked and let it flow. I can only vote for people who make these decisions.
2. Elderly issues. We need driving education and more monitoring for the elderly drivers; respectfully!!! We need families to step up and care for their own grand-parents & parents. We need less governement breaks for the elderly, and pass these breaks to the families who take care of them. For example, family leave time/ share time for families who need to take elderly to doctors. Tax breaks for heads of households who take in elderly (or pay for retirment communities). We need higher taxation on "Death Taxes". Since my country has more elderly than workers, well the elderly has the $ tied up in retirement savings, and other assests. We need to tax these when they die so we can pay for the social programs they created for themselves (Social security & the many other government stuff) Can I improve it? Well, certainly, I can take care of my own family and reach out to the elderly at Church (which I'm doing).
3. Education. School is viewed as punishment rather than priviledge. This needs to change so that childreen will want to learn, and go beyond the school ciriculum on their OWN!!! Private schools seem to influence parents to teach their childreen that school is a priviliage since they're paying. It seems each time Public school speaks, she only cry's for more resources. However, if inidividual parents were to contribute more (time, talent, & finances) they're more motivated. Can I improve ... well, I'm volunteering to teach Kindergardners (my first time) so please pray for me and for these cute little kindergardners I'm leading!!!
