How to breezily mention that I am NOT ignoring with birthday without sounding like I am expecting anything. I don't want to make a big deal about it and the conversation has come up twice.

Ask him out to dinner for that night.. "Hey Monday is my birthday, woudl you like to join me for dinner to celebrate" but br prepared to pick up the check in case he is a dum bunny and doesn't offer to pick it up himself..

Depending on how new the relationship is, I would just explain to him that you are not really looking forward to your birthday, I was in that situation recently. I just let it be known I didn't want any surprise parties and I didn't expect anything and he was very observant. I just told him I wanted to spend a quiet, romantic evening at home just him and I and THAT would be a gift better than anyone could buy! Don't ever stress about your age. Be proud of what you have accomplished in life so far, and be ready for further more excuisite accomplishments to come! By the way, Happy B-Day!
