There are many cameras that will serve an amateur photographer very well, but I would want to find one that I call a "forgiving" camera. This is a camera that even when you mess up will save the picture in spite of your ineptness. I've owned two such cameras, and I've yet to see if the two I own now are such cameras.
The current range of digital cameras run the gamut from complicated to relatively simple. My current digital is somewhere in between and seems a good camera for me, who, regardless of some newspaper photography, consider myself an amateur. This is an HP Photo smart R717. So far, it hasn't made me look a complete fool; that is it takes a good picture if I compose a good picture, shoot straight and don't jiggle it. My other camera has yet to be fully tested as "forgiving" but it seems as if it will be. It's a single lens reflex (SLR) 35mm Cannon Rebel with a 28mm lens and 85mm zoom. So far so good.
A choice of camera for anyone, amateur or professional, is pretty much an individual choice. There are so many good cameras available today. It's really hard to go wrong, I think. It depends more on what you can afford and what use you're going to make of it. So, I'd say the best camera is the one you want and you'll make it the best one for you. Enjoy your camera.

That all depends on your price range, and if you wnat a digital or a film camera
I like digital but there are some photographers that like the plan film cameras.......
try to go to www.shopping.com and look at your price rage in the cameras.. if you get something digital make sure you have a good name brand and have around 5.0 maga pixles that is just a recomendation you can take great pictures on a 2.0 maga pixle camera too ^_^
You can also google this amateur Photograhers cameras or somthing like that

My best suggestion would be the Canon EOS 350D if you are just starting out. It's pretty easy to use and it will allow you to experiment with other types of lenses. Fair price, too.
You also won't outgrow it in case you have moved on from being just an amateur.
