NO, man's best friend can be very good to eat. Don't have to go to Sri Lanka to get it either, many 3rd world countries including Mexico have dog and horse meat on some menus.

There is a religious injunction in Judaism against eating "unclean" animals, of which the dog is one. The same prohibition may exist in Islam, IDK.
Westerners generally don't want to eat dogs and cats because they are considered companion animals. They are considered emotionally human, even though they have 4 feet.
I would hesitate to eat dog out of bacteriological concerns. They are exposed to more bugs because they are essentially carnivores. Same goes for cats. The risk of infection is too great.
When in China, stick to seafood or fowl, and you will be fine.
Indian and Sri Lankan refusal to eat beef (or any other animal for that matter) is based on Hinduism and Buddhism. The cow is a form of their highest god, Vishnu. Since they believe in reincarnation, they believe every animal carries a human spirit, and to kill an animal is the same as murdering a human being.

It's simply cultural differences. There is no "right" or "wrong" about what anyone chooses to eat, or what options are available to them as food. If they were taking someone else's property to eat - a dog or cat that was a cherished household pet to another family - that would be wrong, because they were taking someone else's property. But to take an animal with a huge overpopulation problem and to solve both the problems of animal overpopulation and hunger, I see no problem with that.

You just answered your own question. Where you are has a great effect on what is for dinner. In some places food is scarce, while in others food is everywhere. In europe and here (USA) the dog is part of the family, and you don't eat family. In other parts of the world animals are holier than animals here in USA, again you don't eat holy things.

Yes, for our American culture it is wrong. But you will be hearing the same about pigs in other cultures. Why do Americans eat pigs? There is no consensus on who of these two animals is the dirtiest.
But, have you ever seen a pig eating its own excrement? Yes, they do when it mixes with their food.
So who is filthier, a pig or a dog?

Personally, I think it really depends on your beliefs and culture. You eat what you feel is comfortable to eat and don't let people tell you it is wrong because they think it is.
I don't think I could eat dog, but then again, I can't eat rabbits either ~ and they are suppose to be good. But I had dogs and rabbits as pets as a child, so that would probably explain why I can't wrap my head around trying them.
In China, dog meat is a "winter" meat [according to a friend].
In Finland they eat reindeer.
In Canada they eat moose and deer.

It's not wrong. It's just a cultural thing. It's different between cultures what's normal to eat and what is not. Some people would not eat some of the things we eat and we wouldn't want some of the things they eat.
