There various forms of Baptists. The fundamenlists do not believe in dancing. Some do not allow women to wear pants, wear makeup or cut their hair. Other branches are very liberal in their beliefs.

When I was a Christian I was Southern Baptist. This denomination isn't as uptight as most other Baptist denominations especially Independent Fundamental Baptist which is how I was raised. IFB was very rigid, very "by the Book" if you will. At least being Southern Baptist I got to listen to contemporary music styles like Christian rap, rock, etc. and watch PG13 movies. The IFBers I know use the 6" rule. Where you can't be within 6" of a body of the opposite sex. It was to detour kissing and most certainly sex. If you're going to be a Baptist... be a Southern Baptist... there's more liberty.

There are more different kinds of Baptists than there are of Jews... some do some don't... most I know just go for the moderation in all things pov.... If The Word of God says not to then we don't... It don't say not to dance... but then it dose say David danced Naked in the street... If it's alright with God I think I'll pass on that one.
edit note: rangedog is incorect about the sin'n and Baptists... never met a Baptist that believed as he states. And I am one btw..but that is just the denomination afiliation... All of The True Christian Faith are of The Church of which Jesus The Christ is The Head... That is the only way...only those of The Church will enter Heaven.

i live in the middle of a very large baptist population. i can't speak for all baptist sects, but i do know for a FACT that dancing, or at least with someone from the opposite sex, is considered taboo by a lot of the baptists in my region. it is said that it can arouse sexual temptation, especially in younger teens and adolescence.
after football games, our school always had a dance. the churches always put together an alternative called "5th Quarter" for those who did not want to attend due to their convictions on this subject.
also a radio station in my area used to have a little public service announcement, if that's what you would call it, every weekday morning, that was put on by the different baptist churches from the area. they'd bring students and young adults in and talk about ideas and ways to help be better christians. the topic of dancing always came up around homecoming and prom. they also talked against the idea of males and females sharing the same swimming hours at the public pools.
like i said above, i can't speak for all baptists, but this is my knowledge on the subject. hope i was helpful.

My first husband's family was southern baptist. His dad said no DJ because baptist don't dance,no alcohol either at the wedding or he wouldn't be coming.
We had a DJ ,his mom even did the mom/son dance with him. His sisters wouldn't dance.Dad wasn't too happy but he did show up.
Out of some respect we had an open bar upstairs at our reception hall.Hey,at least it wasn't in the same room.(his dad was a 'recovering' alcoholic when he "found"the baptist church and and made the whole family get involved.)

Baptists are allowed to dance (or else I'm in big trouble). We sing real loud & eat alot too! LOL
There are several offshoot Baptist denominations - Independent, Missionary, etc. You might check into their individual websites...

If you grew up a Baptist, wouldn't you know if you are allowed to dance or not?
I grew up with Baptists.
I can assure you, nothing or no one stops a Baptist from doing whatever he wants.
Why?
Because they believe regardless what they do, all they have to do is ask for forgiveness and it is there for them.
For that reason, they are of the biggest sinners around.

I know some Baptists that don't dance, don't play cards, don't drink , and require the women to wear skirts all the time even in winter. Of course the men can wear nice warm pants while the women are freezing in their skirts. Does the Lord really care if we wear pants? I don't think so........

Dancing is a celebration of life (if you don't believe that, take a look at all the cultures that HAPPILY do it regularly) and if your religion has you believing that there is something inherently evil in this act, then run away as fast as you can and never look back (or you will be turned into a pillar of salt!).
