Well, because according to Christianity ( and others), Sunday is said to be the Sabbtah or a day of rest.

The United States were founded on Chrisitan values and principles, so it shouldn't be surprising that many of the beliefs are still commonplace, even with the incredible religious diversity present in present times.

Many other countries in the world have the same belief in practice and some are even more conservative that the US. In Italy, a mostly Catholic country, a majority of the stores do not open at all on Sundays.

Indian restaurants and stores are typically closed on Mondays when they go to temple.

Stores tend to close around 5pm but restaurants, coffe shops, cafes etc are open. A lot depends on the neigbourhood. Some will close early, some will be open very late (after midnight). Again it depends on the demand in the particular neigbourhood. Not much is open all night. You'll find a few Tim Hortons and variety stores in the wee hours of the morning.

Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest When I was younger stores were not open on Sunday at all, it was called the blue law. It is still enforced (most places) for the Sunday sales of alcohol.

Good Christians do not work on Sundays. Plus, local and national labour laws give all people at least one day off a week for their health, physical and mental, and by default most businesses have chosen the same day, as that makes it a whole lot easier if they all close together.

In the past all stores were closed on Sundays...because Christians are the majority and, to them, it is the Lord's day. There are many businesses that continue to adhere to that tradition, including the post office, car dealerships and some liquor stores. In the case of liquor stores, the laws to keep them closed were known as blue laws, though I never understood why.
