Very fast burn out. The patients in this field require so much from the people caring from them that the end result is that the nurses and sometimes doctors cannot last long unless they are seeking psych help also (this is more so they can continue). I used to work in a psych office as a lot of people but mostly crisis counselor. I burned out after 2 years. The one that sent me over was a guy who told me he couldn't stand listening to children any longer they were too happy. I went for a very long drive that night - I ended up in TN and then had to turn around and drive home before my classes started so I could take tests and then go back to work again that night. Before you go into this field consider what other fields you could go into - labor and delivery while demanding also is very happy, most of the time. Good Luck with whatever you decide

I think its awesome... I was in over 10 Psychiatric hospitals... (Not Working) But i was always interested in it. Some nurses that cared for me were great! Other were the worste! Lets just say im over 18... and when i was in the hospitals i was treated as though i was 6... I am not a stupid person and dont like when people look down on me and a lot of them did that. But toher then that some were just really great! My grandma is a Psych nurse but shes a lil crazy herself... :) Good luck

My sister was a psychiatric aide for some time, and she became pregnant. She was terrified when a patient punched her in the ribs..........and she almost lost her baby....her only child.
Plus you can restrain but you are not allowed to shove or hit back.
So she quit.

You must be able to take a beating from someone lashing out at the system, and you just happen to be there. They don't mean it but are angry just with their illness and not being able to get better on their own.

Have you ever thought of pediatric nursing where you help children?.........

I suggest you search your heart and do what you always wanted to do.............even if it's working in a clinic or busy doctor's office.

My best wishes for your continued success!

If you have a passion for it, I would say go for it. I don't know if the pay will be any different.. but if you feel an overwhelming passion to work with the mentally ill - I think that's great! I already know that you will be good at and a valuable asset to the psychiatric community.

I don't know where you have worked previously, so, that might make a difference. The only way that I would be interested in pscyh would be in an acute care setting, but, I have spent most of my time in ICU's.

I would guess that psych could be boring at times and hectic at others. Pay is a little less than some of the other settings, at least around the mid-West.

Excellent choice. Especially if you can become and ARN or RNC so that you have prescriptive authority. There is a huge need for people trained in medication management of psychiatric disorders. Good luck as you expend your skills. Nursing is an admirable profession

I did it for about 2 years and really enjoyed it for a while, but began to feel burn-out. I'm in hospice now and like it MUCH better. My suggestion is to pray about it. Good luck.
