Prayer is not only important it is essential to a growing personal relationship with God. If you are a believer and have been "saved", God will be continually in your heart and mind. He guides and leads us every minute of everyday of our life. This is so we can know how to be pleasing to Him. We follow Him, not the other way around. We should constantly be praying and thanking Him who gives us life and forgives sins. Why wouldn't you??

It seems that the first question we must ask is this: what is prayer? The simple answer is this: prayer is talking with God. We pray when we open our heart to the Almighty.
Why pray?
It is a great privilege. Can you think of any greater honor than to have an audience with the One who rules over ALL creation? We have been invited to talk with the one who put the stars in place. We are invited to seek counsel from the One who is truth and wisdom. We are invited to sit down with the One who knows all things.
We should pray because we are in a fierce battle. Constantly we are warned of the Devil's intention to neutralize and demoralize us. We are told that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Eph. 6:10). We are in a battle and we need the help of God.
Prayer is a deterrent to sin in our lives. In the quiet times of private, honest prayer God exposes the rationalizations and the excuses that we use to cater to sin. In prayer God holds a mirror up to our lives so we can see the way we really are. . .and repent.
Prayer makes a difference. I can't tell you how it "works" . . .I know that circumstances change when people pray. Diseases are sometimes healed, strength is imparted, guidance is given, hearts are softened, needs are met. I know that when I pray for others it helps them. But I also know that when I pray, I am changed.

Just remember that real praying is a two way exchange. Don't spend so much time talking that you don't listen. Listening is important.
Try this, After you get in bed tonight Thank God for everything that He has given you. Then ask if there is anything that he would like to say. Then just be quiet and clear your mind of as many thoughts as you can. Just listen. You may be in for a big surprise.
Don't try to tell your self that you just made it up when you get the answer. Thats the hard part.
Love and blessings

Read John 14:13-14. Our prayer life becomes effective, as our relationship with Christ becomes more intimate. Having a prayer life is vital for a Christian's growth. Make time in your day (preferably when you first wake up) to pray, and read God's word, the bible. You can start by getting up 10 to 15 minutes earlier than you usually do and be consistent! (Mark 1:35) Praying is just simply talking to God in your own way. He already knows us....He wants us to get to know Him.

Praying isn't presenting a wish list to God.
Praying is entering into agreement with God. It's bringing your sins to the foot of the cross. It's laying your cares upon Him (because he cares for you). It's sitting at his feet and listening to Him as you read His Word so that you can know Him better. It's thanking Him, it's praising Him, it's worshipping Him.
Your Bible class is right, prayer is important.

Well, have you thought about why it is you pray? I think it would be more meaningful to you if you took a minute and answered this for yourself.
I feel very connected to God when I pray...I feel as though I am moving under His hand of protection and into His will. It's an intimate, refreshing, fulfilling, beautiful feeling. There is a psalm that reads, come into His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. When I pray earnestly, I move through the gates and into His courts.

By praying we make war in the spiritual world against God's enemy. We also make things happen because we are heard in heaven. We get a response from God.
