I saw a news story a while back about some kids who got tickets because they warned drivers of police ahead. One kid was a mile ahead of the police officer with a sign that said "Speed Trap Ahead", and a second kid was a mile past the police officer with a second sign that said "Tips Please".

Not sure about other areas, but on Big Island (Hawaii) it is customary to blink your high beams to let other drivers know that a police car is close by.
