Hopefully you have been with this doc for a while and he knows you. He could prescribe meds and if he is a true doc, he will set you up with a therapist. Sometimes talking to somebody who is not involved in your life gives you a fresh perspective. Most meds are prescribed for a temporary time. That is something you really need to talk in detail with your doc about. Don't leave that office if you are doubtful in any way!! This is you health, not a game.
My best wishes!!

They alter seratonin in your brain. A chemical change. Depression is NOT some freak thing, it's a legit imbalance. The medical doctor could give you meds right then and there (or a prescription) or if he's a cautious one, he might send you to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. It really depends on the M.D. you see. Mine would just hand it over. But others may want more tests run or an evaluation of your mental state and condition.

He might prescribe you medications but general practitioners only have a 6 week rotation in psych where a psychiatrist has over a year of internship in the mental health field. If you serotonin, norephinphrine and/or dopamine centers are not working properly antidepressants can help which will decrease you depression however this does not mean you will be happy.

He will be able to prescribe anti-depressants although some some insurance companies will only pay for certain ones. My husband's insurance would not pay for Lexapro because a psychiatrist or neurologist was not the doctor to prescribe, so our family doctor prescribed something else that worked just as well.

Depression is linked to the neuro-transmitters in the brain.Antidepressants work on these neuro-transmitters. Your doctor may try you on one or he may refer you to a psychiatrist. I wish you well.
