No, you shouldn't get cranky. That's actually pretty evolved sibling loyalty going on there. Depending on the three-year-old's understanding and ability to have a discussion, you might want to talk about better ways of handling conflict than hitting (enlist help of adult). But I'd praise that child to the skies for caring about her sister and intervening, even if her way of intervening was a little kid's physical way.

Thank your 3 y/o for being brave and helping with her little sister, but do look into the details with the daycare provider or other parents to be sure the 3 y/o is being protective (good) as opposed to aggressive (bad).

I wouldn't be mad in this situation. Your 3 year-old was defending your 2 year-old, which was probably a natural instinct and a good one at that.
BUT, I would explain that hitting, biting, hurting in general is not good, and next time, to tell an adult right away if anything like that happens.

good job to your daughter for protecting her lil sis but all you can do is try your best and tell her that hitting is not the solution even though its the first thing alot of people resort to
