Pain is definitely an essential function of our nervous system. And it serves to warn us that something is wrong; thereby protect us from more injury. Or in case of a spinal injury, patients feel constant pain because the body is working slowly to repair and construct new neural paths.
If you want to be philosophical, the sensation of pain can also help us to appreciate life when it is enjoyed pain free.
It is comparable to the light of day and darkness of night; hot, humid / rainy, chilly days to warm, blue sky days; etc.

I think pain both physical and mental, has little value and can greatly devalue one's life. I understand pain protects the body, but why can't it be just a sensation instead of extreme discomfort?

Extremely important. If you could feel no pain, you could accidentally put yourself in danger and not realize it.

One short example: My brother is paralyzed from the waist down, got 2 new puppies and they chewed his toes OFF!
He had no idea until he went to get out of bed and saw the blood. Was hospitalized for a long time.
