I have a 7, almost 8 year old male cat. He's a tabby. he seems a little down in the dumps the past few days..I'm just worried that he's sick. He's eating, keeping it down, and when I tempt him enough he will play with his toys. He just seems...sad. I don't know whats wrong. What I'm worried about is he contracted something from these damn roaches that have been in our piece of crap apartment for the past 9 months. We are working on moving out soon as possible but our lease is up in January. We've tried exterminating and everything, and can't tent because its a 12 unit apartment building and not everyone has a problem. But anyway, is there something I should be worried about?

his last visit to the vet was about 1 1/2 years ago because he wasn't eating. Turns out he got into a fight with a cat, had a big scratch on his back we couldn't see, and somehow got a blister or something in his mouth that they were able to fix with antibiotics. We've been giving him a lot of "treats" or wet cat food if that makes a difference. He's so spoiled (blame my mom)

the extermination was about a month ago, and we don't have any rat poison traps or anything.

If you - or even your neighbors - have been poisoning your roaches, you can be poisoning your cat as well, as roaches will happily run through the cat food as well as everything else. DO insist to your mom that you bring the cat to the vet, as he is obviously sick. Explain about the exterminating to the vet and he should call animal poison control.

I doubt he is sad. Most cats just want to lay around they will play if you give enough encouragement. If he is eating and keeping it down. I wouldn't worry. If he starts to stop eating, looses weight, or large amounts of hair then I would worry. We have a female that is about that age and all she does now is lay around. This should help you figure his age and it makes a little more sense of why they slow down. At one year a cat is a grown up, if a cat were a human 1 yr = 18 yrs, 2 yrs = 25 yrs, 10 yrs = 60 yrs, 18 yrs = 80 yrs. Plus with the strange weather we have had so far this year that may play a factor as well. Cats seem to generally lay around more toward fall and winter, even if they are inside pets.

Sounds like he might be ailing, expecially since the other cat is OK. At first I was concerned that the extermination of the bugs might somehow have affected him. Since the other cat is OK there must be something else going on.
So I definitely would have a vet check and a blood panel done to rule out any treatable illness.

Take him to the vet, ASAP! Depression is a tell tale sign of sickness. Cats should be taken to the vet annually for check ups and shots. It's probably not from the roaches themselves, but it could be from the pesticides that were used in the attempt to get rid of them

Give him lots of extra love and attention. Cats have ups and downs, just like people.
Check him for swellings on his neck, though, as well as weight gain. Being sluggish MAY be a sign of hypo-thyroid. Definitely take him to the vet if this keeps up.

I would schedule a check up with the Vet. You cat should have one every year anyways. Tell the vet what is going on. Make sure your cat's shots are all up to date.

If there is an obvious difference in the behavior of your cat, he needs to be taken to the vet. Behavioral changes are a tell-tale sign that he's feeling bad. It may not be serious, but if you wait to take him to the vet, it could end up being something VERY serious.

you should have the cats mouth checked it may have dental disease or an abcess that can depress them and cause serious problems with their heart and lungs. if you are concerned and cant convince to go to the vet get an anal tempreature the normal should be around 100.0 to 102.0 anything else you means there is a problem and illness
