well it depends on what kinds of worms...most heartworm
preventatives will also control the normal types of worms.
I prefer INTERCEPTOR as its safe for even pregnant females,
it controls heartworms, round worms, hook worms and whip worms..
A once yearly (at minimum) check up at the vet is a must!

the best thing to do is get your wormer from your vet once they have seen the dog they will be able to sell over the counter to you within the next year the stuff the vet sells works unlike alot of the products that you find in the supermarket pets should be wormed every 3 months throughout the year and if your vet permits once you have brought the wormer there once a reminder will be generated and sent to you 3 months later to remind you that it is due again and as long as you pop in and pick some up this continues

There is this old wives tale that puppies should be dewormed young and then on a regular basis after that.. *shudders*.. I wish people would stop listening to the old wives... truth is.. if there is nothing wrong with the dog, don't fix it!!.. There are many types of parasites and worms and each one of them are treated with different medicines.. so unless you are a specialist on parasites and hold a medical degree in knowing which medicine kills which.. then I strongly suggest following the Vet's recommendations. I have never put one of my pets through the "drano" program just because "that's what you're supposed to do".. The Vet knows best.

My animals see vet once a year. He tells me what products to use as needed. The worm medicine is a monthly chore that KEEPS the dog from needing to be de-wormed again.
Ok, just read everyone else's answer... and I think I'm wrong. I think the vet worms them and I don't realize it. Sorry.

Your dog should see the veterinarian for a full check-up, shots and a heartworm blood test every year, and immediately if he is sick or injured.
Deworming your dog may not be a routine one for every dog. Depending on the worm burden, the deworming of your dog may be planned. Generally, deworming may be considered once in three to four months or six months.

For heart worm your dog needs a test, then give them the preventitive based on body weight. I would see a vet just to be safe. You wouldn't self medicate, why risk your doggie?

Heartworm monthly. Other than that, rarely if ever. I, of course, would if I needed to, but I never have problems with worms. Even my puppies have not needed it. Have them CHECKED for worms instead of automatically giving doses of poison.

I think once a month. Just buy the wormer at wal mart and it will tell you what to do. You do not need to see a vet.
