I would recommend going to college, and getting a degree in English and Journalism. Try to go to college that is well respected for their Journalism department, and then either work on the school paper, or get an internship at a paper while you are in college, and always try to set up contacts. Then hopefully you will be on your way to your dreams come graduation.

You don't need any of that crap. Zane Gray was a very popular writer and did not use correct grammar or spelling. Many others have been writers without any education. What you need is the desire, some talent, and a lot of hard work. The best advice for any aspiring writer is this: WRITE. Put your butt in the chair and crank out page after page. Any athlete will tell you they cannot play well if they do not practice. You cannot learn a second language without praticing. So you need to practice writing. You need to spend hours and hours honing your craft and writing. Write anything and everything. Write in your journal, write letters, write poetry and stories, but write.
Then start sending out your writing to any and all publishing venues you can.
If you work hard you can have a career writing. And that is all it takes. It sounds simply, and it is....but it is far from easy.
If you want to be a newspaper journalist, the yes you will likely need a degree of some kind, journalism being a good choice. But to be a writer you don't need an education. That said, it never can hurt to increase your knowledge while increasing your skill.

There are many different writing jobs, so there is no single set of educational requirements. Some writing jobs, such as journalist or technical writer, generally require a degree. Some writing jobs, such as novelist or poet, require only that you demonstrate enough ability to interest a publisher.
So you first need to decide what kind of writing you want to do. Once you do that, you can find out what education you will need.

First of all, a writer needs to know spelling and grammar.
Read your question and you will see what I mean.
No one will take your writing seriously. If I were you, I'd go to college....even on-line, so you can make the most of your writing.

To become a poet or anything of that sort, you need a degree in literature.
As for the newspapers and whatever, it's journalism.
