I mean the potential customers just have to walk three more feet and pick up a free one. Are we Americans really that lazy?

I have been to several beaches here in the US, so I feel like I can answer this question. I have only ever found little shells or broken shells while walking on the beach, even though I have looked. I can never find what they sell by the seashore.

Because the shells at that stand are going to be much nicer than anything I'm going to be able to find at the beach. The only things I find are broken shells and little half shells, not the beautiful conch shells I could get if I had a boat and went out into the ocean...which I don't, so I'll have to settle for buying them.

Actually,it's a pretty sound marketing plan.If you go to just about any seashore town, you'll find at least a couple of places that sell seashells.
What would you buy at the beach?Baseballs?Think about it.

Yet another thinly veiled attempt at insulting Americans. Are you that lazy? Maybe it costs too much to ship the shells to your town.

maybe because your most likely customer would be like, a hermit crab or something. the seashore is about as close as you can get to them without drowning. just a theory.
