there are several but its more like common sense than anything else.
1. Ask if it is OK with the person you are with.
2. Though not always necessary, offering a cigarette or a light is always appreciated.
3. Puffing around people is unavoidable but don't exhale into someones face, that's just disrespectful and your smokers breath isn't all that minty fresh either.
4. Ash in an ASH TRAY. That' what it is for.
5. If you have no choice but to throw you cigarette on the floor drop it and step on it. Don't flick it burnt clothes or leg hair is not always followed with a friendly smile.
6. Most important, don't do it in front of kids second hand smoke is horrible for them.
7. Quit!

Of course everyone is right who said it's better not to smoke, and I would add that it is much easier to quit if you do it now before the addiction takes hold of your body. Before long you won't be able to quit and you will wish you never started.
But a person smoking around others should always say, "Do you mind if I smoke?" and it should be done before the cigarette is lit. If the other person is a smoker there is a good chance that it won't bother him/her at all. But even a non-smoker who says it's okay for you to light up will probably prefer that you didn't. You could also be causing a temptation for someone who has already quit, so it's better not to smoke around non-smokers at all, no matter what they say.
There really is no proper way to smoke, so if you are concerned about etiquette then don't start smoking at all.

It really stops me up bad. I can't get around it at all. I realize that people become addicted to them and have a hard time with not smoking but it is really annoying to so many people. I would think that if you see people around that aren't smokers that it is not a good idea to light one up. I don't like it that out grocery store has a place right by the front doors where the employees can sit and smoke. I smelt the smoke before I knew they were there.

If you are outside in the open air, do what you want. If you are in a school or government area, you may be restricted to smoke in certain areas. Also, don't litter. When you are done with your cigarette, extinguish it and save the butt. Through the butt away in a proper receptacle. Butts are not biodegradable and they pollute the ecosystem. If you are in a dry area, be very careful about starting a fire by accident when you ash.
Personaly I hope you quit. Haven't had a cigarette for almost 3 years now. I smoked marlboro reds for 8 years and I regret it.

Nah, I smoke and personally, I feel as though it is my right as an American to smoke wherever and whenever I please. If people dont like it, get to steppin'! Keep on walking folks because if I want to smoke, I'll do it. I'd say just try not to blow it in people's faces. Unless of course they are they kind of people who feel they need to say something to you about your smoking. Then, my advice would be to nod, take a BIG drag off the smoke and blow it straight in their face. When they close their eyes to avoid it, run. Run like the wind because that tends to make then a wee bit pissed. Otherwise, do what you do. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

1 dont try too hard, you will usually make things worse.
2 if you really need to puff out a lungfull, up is best
3 your lit cig is going to be a hazard, not only from burning people, but also the raw smoke from it, just be carefull. chest height is best, you can keep an eye on it without putting someones eye out.
ohh, and the number 1 all time big no-no, if you are going to smoke then SMOKE, do not under any circumstances take a mouthfull and blow it straight out

You should not have started. That is a terrible habit to pick up but you already know that. Smoke outside, away from doorways and windows. Do not smoke around a nonsmoker, excuse yourself and step away to smoke. Do not throw your butt on the ground. Stub your cig out on the ground if there is no ashtray but, throw the butt in the garbage. If you are unsure whether or not you can smoke in a certain situation, you can always ask. It is great that you are aware of the feelings of those around you.

I don't smoke and it doesn't bother me. We have become a nation of whimps which is not good. Smoking is still legal in bars in my city, althoguh only for 2 more years. Sometimes people at a bar feel the need to ask me for my approval if they smoke around me(!).
I tell them its still legal so why should they feel inclined to ask? Most of the studies on second hand smoke are not scientifically proven, either. At most its a minor annoyance with smelly clothes every now and again, nothing serious.
If its legal to smoke in public feel free to. The way the liberals are taking over this country in 10 more years it will be treated like cannabis and you will have to smoke in fear in the privacy of your own home.

I know others have said this, but as a smoker, I agree with them. It is SO not worth it to get started with this horrible habit. Besides the obvious threat to your own health, it's expensive (aren't there lots of things you'd rather spend that money on?), it's gross (everything you own will be affected by the pervasive smell), and you'll find yourself in situations where you're the ONLY ONE who smokes and people look down on you for doing so. You'll miss out on some of the fun so that you can go outside and ruin your lungs while others are inside having a great time. Sooner or later, you'll decide it's not worth it and want to quit. Take it from me, the longer you wait, the harder it is to give up.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, listen to everyone here and quit now while you still can.

Don't, unless you are surrounded by other smokers. Since you've just started, you can still cut the habit. There are greater advantages to being a non-smoker; and greater disadvantages in being one. You think it's cool to be a smoker? Try being cool when you already have bad breath, tuberculosis and other health problems after smoking for the past five years and you'd say otherwise.
