any age is a good age to start---try some edible art tools to start try painting with water, pudding, whipped cream, mashed potatoes, try different textures and temperatures like ice cubes or warm potatoes
around 1 1/2 with some very large size non toxic crayons be sure to monitor your child and remind them to use the paper, about the same age you can also try markers and play dough( you can also try edible types of this) paint can also be added at this age using an easel and large brushes and large pieces of paper(try newspaper to start)
and then as your child becomes more familiar iwth those items add new things to color on and with and paint with (try boxes, paper bags, wrapping paper, and potatoes, leaves, toy cars, and other items to paint with)
there are lots of ideas at crayola.com, parents.com and other child, parent and daycare, preschool websites to get more ideas and if you check at your local library there are tons of books.

It's never too young. For kids as little as yours use supplies that they can eat. I know it sounds weird, but they have a blast. Put a cheap plastic table cloth on the table and let her "paint" with whipped cream. Get her some bath art supplies if you are worried about mess. They have paints and crayons to use in the tub. Don't worry if she takes a bite of her supplies kids art stuff is super safe now. Just keep showing her what to do with it other than eating it :)

They're never too young. Now your baby is beginning to see colors and you could start by getting some very colorful board books to look at. Crayons and paints shouldn't be introduced till around age 2. At least that's my experience. Look at alot of books while you point out and name the colors. Eventually the baby will get it and you'll be surprised at how easy it'll be to find the baby's favorite color.

Stick with the non-toic washable crayons...finger paints are a total pain and they get to use those in school. You can also do glue and sand art, glitter and glue....keep it simple there's plenty of time as your baby gets a bit older.

lol...... you can get non-toxic art supplies and tell your little one crayons are not for eating. Any age is a good age to start art. keep the sessions short , easy and supervised. You child will get the point and love the fun.
