There are many spiritual books available dive into the writings
Thomas Merton Mother Teresa Gandhi Buddha Jesus St Francis these are my favorites and tend to be more Christian because that is my tradition but she could choose what she likes. read the prayers and about the life's of people who have found peace in a Higher power. then when she is ready go find a group of people who worship a loving Higher power together that she is comfortable with. This is what I have done and my church is very very active in helping others helping the poor and educating about saving our earth. If she is a surfer I bet she would like meditation. The most important thing is to have an open mind and to allow God to guide her where He or possibly she wants her to be.
One more thing a person who seeks to be closer to God should make themselves ready by living a clean lifestyle. If Melisa is a surfing bank robber or a Surfing assassin or a surfing heroin addict and I'm sure she is not any of these things but cleaning house is pretty much necessary for a spiritual quest.

Don't know what "feels God" means. If she truly believes she is connecting with a higher power when she surfs, then the obvious next step is for her to make surfing her official religion (if she hasn't already done so). She could call it Catchawaveism.

My yoga teacher, on Maui, said that to become enlightened you can sit in an ashram for twenty years and meditate. Or, you can go surfing. You can take the long way around, he said, or you can surrender. Surfing is like a direct path to God.
If Melissa is looking for something that will uplift her, and connect her heart and soul and body, I recommend Yoga.
If she wants religion, I recommend Religious Science.

The sea is a very spiritual place. There is little in life to remind you just how infinately small we are like the sea, unless it is the Grand Canyon or the top or a huuuuuge mountain.
I would suggest some Christian meditations done on the shore. It can't hurt to pray while surfing, either!
I also love the sea.

The Spirit of God is there for all to feel, It is that calling that leads us to his son Jesus Christ . Tell Mellissa to read Romans in the Bible and know this.
For with the heart if you beleive unto righteousness: and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation

The Bible would be the best place to start.
The Gospel of Luke is my favorite...
Tell Mellissa to stay away from Charismatic people though...they're crazy!!

If she really does feel God then she should start getting into Christianity.
If she only feels euphoric chemical reactions then perhaps Buddhism.
