I had 32 pelvic radiation treatments about 15 years ago and yes, diarrhea was one of the side effects they warned me about so I was not surprised by it . It began to occur about halfway through the treatments and continued for several months after. I suspect it had something to do with the radiation upsetting the balance of flora in the colon. Plain yogurt and acidophilis pills helped.

As some others mentioned, radiation effects only occur in the area being irradiated. If the bowel is located within the radiation field, diarrhea is a very common side effect. Your diet should consist of high fiber, mild (not spicy!) foods. You should also limit your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated. Please remember that most radiation side effects like diarrhea are easily remedied through medications and minor lifestyle changes and that you should always mention any discomforts to your radiation therapist, nurse or doctor. They will be glad to answer your questions and help you get through your treatment as painlessly as possible!

Radiation in cancer therapy can lead to many different side effects, most of which results from the inflammation that occurs when normal tissues gets bombarded with radiation. When radiotherapy given to the abdomen or pelvis, the intestinal tract gets affected, leading to a phenomenon termed radiation enteritis. This occurs when the mucosa gets eroded and sloughs off, leading to malabsorption and secretion that ultimately manifests as diarrhea.

Yes it is, one of many side effects which may or may not happen. Side effects are as unique as the individual. If it lasts more than 48 hours, consult your physician. Be aware that persistent diarrhea can result in dehydration.

radiation's effects tend to be more localized, so if for example it's a type of intestinal cancer, diarrhea is a likely symptom - but as far as cancer treatments go, i would guess chemotherapy is a much more likely candidate for causing that.

It depends on where the body was irradiated. If it was the colon / abdomen, definitely a possibility.
