A lot. Let's imagine a diabetic with congestive heart failure, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, a bladder infection, ovarian cysts, kidney failure, cirrohsis of the liver, and pneumonia. This is one sick puppy, but we could add arthritis, degenerative joint disease and peptic ulcers without killing the patient yet. In short, some people are very ill for quite some time before dying.

HA! Did you ever see that Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns goes to the doctor. He explains that since Mr. Burns has SO MANY things wrong with him (as illustrated by plushy balls), that the plushy balls couldn't get into Mr. Burns (as demonstrated by a little door) because there were just so many of them. He was safe because of the balance.
