If I need to get surgery done on my leg, would that be covered, or would I have to pay for it? What about physio-therapy (with reference form my doctor)?

Well, I'm in Quebec city in Canada and what you need to remember is that each province has it's own health care plan. In Quebec, there are no private hospitals and we have a health care card. If you are from Quebec, you would just use your card. If you are from another province, you would have to pay, use your insurance and get a refund from your province when you get home. There are some things that are not covered by the health care card (such as physiotherapy, even with a doctor reference...sorry!) Cosmetic surgery is not covered unless your health is in danger (need a boob job because you have too much back pain from too big boobs...) As the years go by, more and more services are beginning to be "paid" services. In other provinces, things are different (in Alberta, for example, there is a private health care system and a public one). Good luck!

It depends what province you live in. Some provinces have private health care and some are totally covered under provincial healthcare. In BC, as long as it was for medical reasons and not consmetic, you would be totally covered. The surgery and physio. If you lived in Alberta for example, (they have private healthcare) you would be responsible for buying your own private healthcare and if you didn't have any, you would have to pay for the surgery and physio yourself. Hope this helps

It depends on your provincial health care plan. All necessary services are covered by MSP such as doctor visits, surgery recommended by your physician and hospital stay.
Prescriptions are not covered by some provincial healthcare plans unless you are admitted and receiving them within hospital. Physiotherapy is a service if recommended by your doctor would be covered with you paying a small out of pocket user fee each time. If your injury was caused in a motor vehicle accident or is covered by WCB or some form of auto insurance then you would not have to pay if your your doctor recommended physiotherapy as a necessary part of your treatment
Services such as chiropractics were covered a few years ago (in BC) but are not anymore.

Everything would be covered as far as the surgery goes...as long as it isn't elective surgery...you need to talk to your medical provider (MSP in B.C.). As far as physio is concerned...that is covered under your extended medical through your work (if you have it) If you don't have an extended medical plan from your work...then you have to pay a user fee for physio.

OHIP covers most health costs excepts for Doctors notes, etc....
physio was covered for me by OHIP, depends on the surgery and aftercare. If Doctor says its necessary for your recovery than it is covered. We as Canadians are very privileged to have such great medical coverage.

Depends on which province you're in.
However basic care hospital stays etc. are covered. Generally stuff like plastic surgery isn't covered and you'd have to pay on your own. As for pt in Ontario it is no longer covered.

Americans visiting Canada pay up front for any medical care .

Like the first responder said, the provincial insurance plan will cover the cost of your surgery/hospital stay. Having private insurance may upgrade your room to private but really they will put you in whatever bed is free.

Physio - if you are under 18 or over 65 the government will play for it. If you are any age in between it's an out of pocket expense or private insurance.

In the Province of Ontario, no health coverage is free of charge. Every Ontario resident who pays taxes is assessed a health tax that is calculated from the taxable amount earned. In other words, the Government doesn't pay for the health costs of those Ontarians who don't work. The tax payers who work are footing the bill. The system would be fair if everyone were required to pay their own health bills. We shouldn't expect strangers to pay our health expenses.
