Woodpeckers also confuse the sound of electric transformers found in fluorescent lighting with wood boring insects.

Shooting the bird could get your friend arrested for discharge of a dangerous weapon and destruction of wildlife.

Check the link for ideas to discourage them.

This is SO annoying. for about four years my brother had a woodpecker that drilled a hole about two inches in diameter right through the front of his house over the garage door. He tried everything to get rid of it and it just kept coming back and coming back and drilling the same hole in the same place. Finally he put up a metal plate about a foot square and the bird gave up. But he didnt like having the metal up there, so he took it down after a couple months, and the darn bird came back.
It didnt come back this year so I think it died.
There werent any termites or anything, and he tried the owl thing. The woodpecker ignored it. So, goodluck to your friend!

If the woodpecker still insist on drilling holes into the shutter and/or siding, then get fake owls and place
at the corners. You can buy the owls at Lowe's.

Call an exterminator to come and examine the house. Usually woodpeckers drill houses because they sense insects. Could possibly be termites.

I saw this on animal planet. Put fresh fruit under the tree. Wood peckers prefer fruit to bugs. They are just looking for food. Once the bird eats it'll go away.

Please don't kill the bird. It's obviously attracted to some larva in the facia. Just spray some deer repellent on the area where the bird is looking for food. That should take care of it. Everyone has got to eat.
Good night and good luck.
