He was a TV evangelist who healed people in person and through letters on the show. It was as always a great show.

After he and Marte divorced in 1993, Tilton married evangelist and former beauty queen Leigh Valentine. Valentine then turned around and divorced him two years later, citing constant abuse. He would throw her down stairs, slam her against walls, hurl cordless telephones at her head, drink himself into blind rages (often declaring he was the Pope) and wake up in the night screaming that rats were eating his brain. During divorce proceedings, she cited his constant paranoia and "disguise kits" (fake moustaches, $1200 custom-made wigs) which he'd wear frequently during their first year of marriage.

Tilton has since married a Florida woman, Maria Rodriguez. More than ten years after the collapse of his ministry, he's still reaching millions of television viewers from his mailing list -- and several years ago his televised informercials were picked up by Black Entertainment Television.

It was a great show, wasn't it? He, along with the magic of video editing, is probably available right now on YouTube as "Pastor Gas". You just have to see it. It's a complete hoot.

To build on previous answerers, the story goes like this:

Tilton makes millions on prayer,
Others think that isn't fair.

ABC investigated,
Then some donors litigated.
Tilton kind of disappeared
Tried to come back, we feared

Got divorced, then remarried
Marty, Leigh, then to Mary
Two divorces could be tough
I'd guess his times were pretty rough

But Jesus saved some cash for him
So he could buy a beachfront pad
Rumor says he drinkin' gin
From on his yacht, that's not too bad!

Robert Tilton has a new young wife and is still peddling snake oil late at night on Bible Nazi TV networks. I made a tape of him talking in tongues with lots of silent gaps in it and hoisted a boom box high into pine trees next to a right-wing Bible camp and let it run for hours. They couldn't find it and the batteries finally ran down by dawn.

For the longest time I would come across "Brother Bob" in the wee hours of the morning on BET. Those shows were at least ten years old and all "Brother Bob" had to do was sit back and relax and collect "seed faith offerings" from the idiots who allow themselves to be scammed. From the first time I saw him I knew he was a fraud/snake oil salesman, and apparently I was right.

It was Robert Tilden. And he was an idiot who made promises to people as though God was his own private benefactor.

People like that hurt Christianity. I hope he is doing time somewhere for taking people's money.

Irrelevant. Televangelism in ineffective at reaching a lost and dying world. They need the gospel, not hype.
